Souquet/Wilson - Textbook Technique

finished watching the Archer/Souquet match in Las Vegas last night, and heard Mark Wilson make a comment on this shot. he said something along the lines of Textbook Technique.

well, correct me if i am wrong, but this isnt exactly what i would call Textbook where Ralf ended up on the '8' Ball. perhaps his technique was textbook, but it seems like he was on the 50-Yard line here at Point B. looks like he should have stopped a few inches short, or rolled another few inches further.

just thought i would throw this out there.

IMO, Ralf still had a shot - for him a very high percentage shot. Players play shots within their comfort zone, and this shot is definitely in Ralf's comfort zone. Another thing to look at is that the cue ball is in the center of the table and he has an angle to play position on the 9 ball. 9 ball is a game of angles, I never like being straight in, except maybe on the 9. On a shot such as this, coming from the 7 to the 8 can be tricky if try to get too cute. Ralf played position for the center of the table with perfect speed and took a harder shot on the 8 ball - it sure beats scratching or coming too far down table.

Tap Tap Tap, the center of the table is never a bad place to be.
 
I think Ralf showed great cue ball control in avoiding the scratch in the lower right corner pocket, and navigating the cue ball to within inches of the 8.
 
It is text book technique. He shot the ball and the CB ended in the miidle of the table. That is textbook.

The problem is for better position on the 8 he needed to stop short or roll a little further.
 
I haven't watched that particular match, but did Mark say his technique was textbook referring specifically to his position play? Soquet has great mechanics and this might be what Mark meant by "technique." (As a point of reference, if Mark said Soquet had bad technique, I wouldn't think about his position play, but about his stoke...)

i was watching when this particular shot came up, it seems like wilson had said on the shot before was as ralf was stroking that he used text book technique, i inferred that he was talking about ralf mechanics.

that match actually had me laffin a little cuz there was ralf......playin at his somewhat slow pace, looking at every shot 3 times......and then theres archer picking lint off the table every shot, moving pocketed balls from one pocket to the other and cleaning the cueball.....it was like an ocd olympics.....i think if you wanted to torture earl you could tie him up and make him watch these guys play, his head would explode lol
 
Textbook meaning, coming into the angle rather than across the angle on the 8. We don't know if this diagram is exactly right, you can be fooled by cameras.

At any rate it's a easy cut leaving an angle to get perfect on the 9. Yes it could be a tad less angle if the diagram is correct but that won't bother even far less than pro caliber players.

I really dont care for him(wilson) as an announcer. I really hope if Pool gets big that a good announcing team will emerge.
 
Shot

Shot looks to me like he just shot it with straight follow and took the natural angle roll, and it is okay. (especially if it is a pressure filled shot), but I like
using a little high left on it, coming up on the long rail a little further, and shooting the 8 in the corner with a much slighter angle.
 
i do think you interpreted his comment wrong. technique is referring to his cueing and stroke etc, not the actual shot.

The 90-degree tangent line from the 7-ball extends slightly to the left of the lower right corner pocket. If one isn't careful, it is possible to scratch in that corner pocket. Using follow or draw, as appropriate, can help alter the cue ball's path along the tangent line.
