Online auction, unable to view in person. How much do you spend on this? It closes today and I would love any outside opinions on it.

110v, was in a residence for 50 years or more.

I am not able to view it. Having said that I have looked at a zillion old lathes and they can be from Gems to junk no matter how they look in a picture.

One of the big bonuses with some of these used lathes are all the stuff they come with. Often worth more then you are paying for the lathe.

Now a days though they usually sell them stripped down and sell off the rest on ebay.

That's weird, I can email pictures as well. It has a number of chucks and a bunch of tooling, power feed, reversible motor

The measurements they gave me are basically useless, but the entire lathe is 62" long, bed is measured at 58.5 according to the seller. Subtract the headstock and chuck and it is probably a 36" center

Spindle bore appears to be well over an inch

With that being a 9", I doubt the spindle bore is over an inch. With a 52" bed you might be under the 36" as well

You do know that if it needs any work, South Bend parts are very expensive.

I do, and that is factored in to what I'm willing to spend on a gamble.

I didn't know what the hardened machinists here would think so I figured I would ask.

I'm looking at getting it for under 500.

Under $500 would be a good deal. Around here they would be asking $1,500. Looks like a small bore. Would make a good tapering lathe. If it were close, I would be all over it for $500.

El oh El

So I missed out on that South Bend and fell into a monstrous old Pratt and Whitney 1236 for $250

The table under the bed and legs are one large cast piece.

Comes with a 4-jaw chuck, some assorted tooling, a couple old bearing steady rests, centers, arbors, neat stuff.

I got so lucky on it that I probably had a winning lottery ticket in my future I just used up.

I got a 16" for $750 but not with as many toys as your getting there..... not bad for $500 if it runs well . Take an indicator to the chuck.
