Southwest cues how much and how long through the years?

After reading through the post of a member waiting 18 years to get his opportunity for his cue to be built it got me thinking how much it’s changed over the years. I would say it was 30 years ago at this point that one of my close friends and his father ordered a southwest cue for each of them. I believe it took 3 years and he went to pick it up the week franklin died. They actually attended his funeral. I have 0 patience lol so I couldn’t wait that long let alone 18 years for a cue.
So here’s my question if I may. If you ever got or have a southwest cue that you ordered new I’d be interested to know what year you ordered it, how long the wait was, and if you don’t mind the quoted price? If your not comfortable giving the price I understand.. I never cared telling people what I paid but some don’t like to offer up that info. of course feel free to post pics!!

I’m not trying to offend or upset anyone asking this or am I trying to get a deal. Southwest is one of the longest waits for cues that I know of and I’m just interested to see how the wait and price changed through the decades.

I wouldn't be able to wait either.

It is a very interesting business model. I bet just requiring a $300 deposit to get or stay on the list would dramatically reduce that wait time.

I would have to agree with that

I ordered mine in 2003 and took delivery of it in early 2015.

I personally love the hit of my Southwest and am not disappointed with buying it. When it arrived it was exactly as ordered. It is the 3rd cue from the left.

I have had a few Southwest cues I’ve ordered over the years. It’s not about whether the wait is worth it or not. it doesnt cost you anything upfront to get on the wait list. You just go about your normal life knowing you wont receive the cue for many years to come. There are plenty of other very good cues you can get and play with during your wait period. About a year before your wait time is up, Southwest will reach out and send you an order form. You are pretty limited as to what kind of cue they’ll design. It’s mainly staggered 6 pointers or just plain cues with no inlays. Once you design the cue, you will need to pay half the cost up front. Pricing is based on todays value, not the year you might have ordered it. About a year later the cue will be finished, you’ll pay the remaining balance and they will ship the cue to you. The last cue I ordered was in 2004 and it was delivered in 2021. Total price with matching joint protectors was around $4K. The cues are not cheap, but you will have quite a bit of equity in them as the pricing will be far below retail value on them.

Wow. Times certainly change. Bought my first Southwest new off a rack. 1987. Walked out the door with it. Got to choose from several. Was just a new cue brand. Probably $650 ish. Sent it back for 2 more shafts. Maybe $80 per. With the dealer's markup, cue, 4 shafts, $800. Just another cue I could've ran through. Still have cue. I didn't baby it like an heirloom. I used every day I played. Pool room, bar. Everywhere.
This cue got stolen. 1989. Miracle, got cue back. In interim, was in Vegas, went to their shop. (the Franklins) Nice people, had time for me. Explained my plight. Custom ordered a cue on the spot. Year later. Cue came. I believe it was $680. Never played with it. Put it away and sold it a few years back. Now I wouldn't have enough days left to outlast wait.

I kinda chuckle about this. When I joined AZB and started to learn more about all things related to pool, that was 15 years ago, or so. I learned about the wait for a SW cue, and thought about putting my name in to be on the waiting list. After more thought, I came to the realization that I likely would never go through with spending the money to actually purchase one. It is comical to think that if I had put my name on the list, my turn would be coming up shortly. ;)

What does a Southwest cue do that some other brand doesn't? .... they are definitely not very unique looking.... most seem like they are built from a standard design pattern ... same rings.... same look ... why wait 18 years to buy one? chasing nostalgia? i was at a poolhall a while back and played a few games with a SW .... now i am even more bewildered ... i would rather play with a nice sneaky pete with a good shaft for less than $1k .... i definately wouldnt pay a couple thousand+ for a southwest and have to wait 18 years for it .....

That’s how I always felt . Southwest are over all very simple designs and I feel I could find something on the secondary market but like someone else said you pay nothing to get your name on the list and if your name finally comes up and your not interested they don’t care. Lol next man up. So if your in love with them buy one one from someone and if you still love them when it’s your turn by a custom one
