Southwest wood combo

They are fancy production cues in my opinion because they make their cues all the same. The only thing that probably sets them apart is their process and their treatment of wood. Curing the wood is what makes the long wait time, but once your spot gets called, I am pretty sure the turnaround time is quite quick for a so-called custom cue.

Just imagine, Predator or Jacoby treating their own wood the same way. You would essentially be a Southwest.

Reason it is "production" to you is they have a formula that works and is repeated. That is fine by me. Then the customer can't get in there and muck it up. I question custom cues where the cue maker bends to what an inexperience customer wants and after it is resold, people are like WTF. Well it is a true custom- might play like shit tho.

All cues are produced, so they can all be considered to be "production cues".

Custom Cues are also produced, but they may have fancy woods, weird colors, certain weights, more shafts & so on, so they can truly be categorized as Custom Cues. If the cue doesn't play well, it's worthless. However, a new tip might change everything.

I've never had a Southwest Cue, but I've played with one & a Jerry Franklin Cue... they are good cues.

While ebony is a great wood, I have come to the conclusion that rosewood is top notch. Now out of all the rosewoods available a nice piece of figured Brazilian Rosewood would be an amazing and desirable SW cue.

x2 here.

I would be looking for a premium piece of Brazilian Rosewood, (aka. "Kingwood" )

I also like the lightly striped Ebony (Magassar Ebony ? ) for certain cue combinations.

My understanding is that kingwood is a rosewood and some of it comes from Brazil, but it is not what is normally called "Brazilian rosewood." The two trees are different species (cearensis for kingwood, nigra for Brazilian rosewood) from the same genus, dalbergia.

Both can make great pool cues.

In this day and age with all these exotic woods incorporated in cues, I find it weird that people still want ebony. I don't get the lure in ebony. It is just black. Maybe because it is exotic for a wood to be deep dark black. It is used often.

I think with a special cue that is being built, one should think outside the box and go with a more exotic wood. It's fine to have ebony incorporated in the cue if it consists of anything black in the design but don't design a cue based on ebony.

Gaboon ebony is a fantastic wood it is used in many instruments and has stood the test of time. It is very dense and looks good with other woods that compliment it. If you look closely on my SW you can see grain.

I used to have a 30 ann. Ginacue with ebony points and have a Joss west with ebony points and also have Prewitt that is all ebony. Tulipwood into ebony looks great. I have a Wes Hunter cue that is the reverse of my SW and has a tulipwood forearm with ebony points five in the forearm and five below the wrap.

Ebony in combination with other woods has been a staple along with ivory in upscale cues. I guess we are in a whole new world and things are gonna change for cue makers and collectors.

I have played with my ebony and tulipwood SW for years and the cue has won many times what I paid for it retail from SW.

Pernambuco Southwest

Tried taking some better pictures, don't know I did though.
