Southwests???

I hear a lot and read about southwest cues. I personally have never held, hit, or even seen one. Maybe because I am from south Dakota but my question is.... What's so great about these cues?

They're made of wood!

Southwest cues retain their value well. Well constructed with nearly flawless workmanship.

As with a lot of other cues which have a reputation of being great playing cues you do not see them in the hands of top pro players very often.

I handled some of these SW cues and to be honest it wasn't all that cracked up to be.

Put the cue together and you can feel grooves where they connect. The joints look like they are made from different pieces of wood because of discoloration in the staining.

Just my opinion, and the cue I inspected was from someone that was called on the list and he had it built recently. Last year.

You sure like putting a bunch of crap out there dont you? Just by that statement, if we ever matched up, I'd send a limo to pick you up

I have only had the pleasure of trying 3 SW cues. That being said, I am not an A player either although I have owned a lot of cues. The SW standard taper is quite stiff to me. Too stiff for my game. The workmanship was superb on the ones I've seen and of course we know the resale value is excellent.

For my money, I'd just as soon have a cue by Jeff Olney. His taper is also too stiff for me. I requested a 12.75 mm modified pro taper on my last cue from him. The wood, veneers, and ringwork was fantastic but I still had to have a local cuemaker lengthen the taper. I like a very small amount of flex in a shaft. YMMV. Half the cost for a very similar cue. Great workmanship also. The resale value can't compare of course but neither does the cost...Tom

I would love to play you.

Perhaps next time, tell me where you located, and if I'm in the area I will think of you.

Justin put this thread to rest with his first post and there is still this much garbage posting. gotta love forum life...

I pretty well have the exact same opinion as yourself.Solid hit but not my kind of hit.

Yes, you cannot find out the truth if you start a thread and just read others' ideas, go find some SW and shoot some balls with them.

What Justin (aka JCIN) said is so true. even SW cues dont hit exactly the same. I have hit with a couple of SW and now I own 2 sugartrees, every SW hits differently from one another and so do the sugartrees.

you dont need cues that hit great to play with, you need cues that you hit great with.

This is very true. Not all cues are made from the same tree and if they were there is no guarantee they will hit exactly the same.

I think we are all guilty of this and that is the mental and psychological aspect of the game. If we buy a certain cue, it makes us believe that it's the perfect cue and one problem of our game is solved.

So any mistake is the shooter...unfortunately it has always been the shooter.

Far as I know SW uses no stains of any kind on their cues so I'm not real sure what you mean but If there is something wrong with the cue tell your buddy to send it back. Laurie will fix it if they screwed something up on their end.

The only Stained South West's come from China!:grin:

Art>>>>>>>>>has been happily playing with a South West since 1986
