Spalted Maple?

> Quilted comes in about 5-6 different types, according to the style of figure in the grain, and is reputed to be VERY soft. I've only seen one quilted cue,a plain front Josey, and it was pretty well awesome, but getting the grain to line up just right without splitting and bookmatching it is probably very difficult. Look up David Thomas Mcnaught guitars,or several other high-end guitar builders for more examples.

Thanks guys for the comments!
Yea after reading the 2 posts it sure seems like using spalted maple is a baddddd idea for a cue....I wouldn't wanna hit with it only to have it in pieces on the table. A pity though...I think that it's a beautiful beautiful type of wood.....looks like I'll prolly be doing ebony or tulipwood instead.
thanks,
ray

Dont give up yet Ray, I would think that if you cored the spalted maple then hardened it with something like thin superglue it would make a nice cue.

Talk to some of the cuemakers that core wood and see what they think.

I saw that cue a couple of years ago in St. Charles IL. It was the most awsome plane cue I've ever seen. It was made out of quilted Big Leaf Maple. He was asking 1,100.00 for it and he sold it there but I don't know at what price.

Have any of you out there ever used this wood, or have a cue made out of this wood? I really like the look, and am considering making a cue out of it. I'm also trying to find out how this wood "hits" and if generically a cuemaker would charge more for using this kinda wood.

thanks!
Here is a cue with spalted used as inlays in an Ebony butt that I did several years ago. Its really a beautiful wood.

Hey guys,

thanks so much for the pix and comments...I think I'm gonna hold off on the spalted maple for now because it's such a volatile wood....I'd probably be better off with something safer!

Sometime down the line, I'd still love to make one just to gawk out in my glass cabinet!

thanks,
ray
