Does/should un-stabilized spalted tamarind need to be cored for strength? Looking to use this for both the forearm and the handle.
Pretty light - so I thought I'd ask the pros.
Thanks!
Ken
I think it would be beneficial to have the piece stabilized. Spalting can make wood punky.

I recently acquired a new batch of spalted tamarind and a some of the pieces are very heavy and hard. Over 50 lbs per square foot. Not sure why because they have nice figure but I plan to use them without stabilizing. Coring of course.
Thanks to all for the responses!
So much to learn...….so little time.
Thanks!

Turn it round.
Drill 1/2 hole end to end.
Get stabilized. Inside and outside get stabilized better with drilled hole.
Turn again to correct the warp.
Bore the hole for final size .
What setup to you use to turn the warp out with a 1/2 inch hole at the ends full of crystalized resin?
If you're going to core it anyway the outer part you will use should be plenty solid.
howd those turn out?I recently acquired a new batch of spalted tamarind and a some of the pieces are very heavy and hard. Over 50 lbs per square foot. Not sure why because they have nice figure but I plan to use them without stabilizing. Coring of course.
