Speaking of handicapping, when is the best time to adjust the spot?

For very long time whenever I was gambling, I would play at least two sets at whatever weight was given before it was time to adjust. Many times, this was done even. I wanted to get a feel of if the weight was right, and I wanted to see just how well my opponent worked with the way he/she was working with. Having just gotten back into the game recently, of notice that players are wanting to adjust in the middle of a set or at the end of the first set because Won 7-5. They realize quickly they can't win the game and they want out, or they want something in which they can steal with.

I'm not a good pool player anymore. My stroke has left me, but my love of the game and action have never strayed. While I'm doing a lot more staking, I still love to get over the table and play some. The problem is, I haven't found a game yet that's fair, short if a 17 year old at the Derby. The games I'm winning with a spot, I'll win big. Then I'll get talked into playing 1P, which I've played less than a dozen times in my life. I try to get big spots (7 and the last 2) thinking that it'll be close, but my opponent runs over me and won't adjust to where it's fair. To where each set is coming down to the wire and no one is rolling over the other.

I was told I needed to get the 7 from a guy I played the other night. We went with it, dropped to even after two sets, and after 3 more, he wanted to change the game. Because I'm a nice guy, I let him get 2 games of one hole out of me, but explained that I'll never play him at it again. I was about to give him the 8 and the last two, but he wanted to steal rather than equalize. I can understand being down, but there's no need to steal like that. I felt horrible when I realized that we were in a bad game with him giving me weight when it should have been the other way around.

I guess I'm just frustrated that I can't get what I call a "fair game" anywhere. If someone approaches me and asks to play, their offer is going to be stupid and they don't want to negotiate. They just heard that I was good action and easy money, so rather than actually play a game where there's an equal chance for both, they trap me. It's shit like that that kept me away for so long, and I guess I hoped that things would have changed, especially with the geography change. Nope, same shit no matter where you go. Lock Artists are everywhere.

One way to handle the adjust is to agree beforehand that for every hundred one player is ahead over all sessions, he has to give up a game on the wire in a race to 10. If you like higher stakes, make the step at each thousand ahead. Of course when the game gets to fair, the better player will probably quit unless he's in it for the fun.

never in the middle of a set

I think its fair for a player to ask to adjust the spot in between sets , never once a set has started. you always have the option to pull up if you don't like the game.

I am not a big fan of spots or weight and always I found I played at least a ball better without a spot. sometimes I got there sometimes I didn't.

In todays pool rooms though it seems everyone wants a spot that's so much in their favor its stealing

"I may give you what you want , but I will never give you what you need" wish I could remember who first said that line
