Spectator Shelf?

Since Spectator Chairs are so much more expensive than other stools, I thought I might go with a pair of bar stools, and move the coasters and cue holders to a shelf in the immediate area.

I bought (and assembled) a pair of 29" padded stools with backs and arms, rated at 400 lbs, for just under $100 each, but I was undecided on how I wanted to do the shelf.

To that end, I thought I'd let the AzBilliards crew give me some feedback on my initial ideas - Wide open to all suggestions at this point.

Thanks!

I like both designs. But I think I like the cues in the center better. So that the drinks will have plenty of room to be pulled out and put back. Might even be able to fit a small plate on there for a snack.

Take care to make all the surfaces that touch the sticks rounded, and even add some soft material to them (cloth, foam weather stripping, etc).

Thanks, yeah, was going to ask about sizing the notches for the sticks - right now I figure about the size of a quarter for the cut-out and then glue in felt lining... I'll figure out the size I want soon enough - but will definitely be lining them.

EDIT: More, the size and spacing may work better with four cue slots instead of five - the drawing allows for 1 inch wide slots with 1 1/2 inches of spacing.

I would make the notches to hold the cues more shallow. If someone bumps into the cue, you would rather the cue fall than break or dent severely.

I like your design. I have a couple of thoughts for you to consider. I think I would drill holes for the glasses and put a bail underneath to prevent the glass from falling through. That way it's next to impossible to knock a glass over. A glass or can on a coaster can easily be tipped over by a cue or...

Where I play they have cue rests built in along the wall. The indentations for the cues are lined with felt (probably scrap when the tables were covered) and glued on. Over the years, almost all are gone - having peeled off over time or with help from customers. Not sure what material you have in your drawing; but you may face the same issue.

Going with the second picture, but with 4 cue slots instead of 5, spaced evenly for less crowding.

Thanks to everyone for posting - will (eventually) follow up with some pictures.
:)

Ready for stain, then cork coasters and green felt for the cue slots...

This is not me, a buddy is doing the woodwork and staining.

If you haven't already located the cork, Sears (and other places I'm sure) sells cork to line toolbox drawers. It's thin and east to cut. Comes on a roll if I remember right.
