Speed Or Another Route?

ok, had this spread the other night. just assumed it was a simple speed control shot, going one rail up for the 2-Ball. is there another way to play this? speed is so CRITICAL here, you need to get on the right side of the 2-Ball to fall naturally over for the 3-Ball. perhaps a tip, or half tip, of outside english to get to around Point A was the plan.

thoughts?

CueTable Help

Well, the first thing I saw was that I would try to bump the rail and come towards the 2. I would aim to bump the rail just below the side pocket..

Reason being, the worst you could do with that route is fall dead *** straight, and in that circumstance, you just roll forward to just past the 9, put the three down at pocket speed, then run out.
Your angle is more speed sensitive...

This is what I like..

CueTable Help

I use at little right spin as possible, and try to use draw to form the angle, as I find that an easier way to control the speed, or at least a more consistent way. I know the side pocket looks scary, but if you avoid overspinning here, it won't be a problem..

Try this route out.. One tip below center, smooth, long follow through.

Let us know how it works..

id put a little right on whitey to come off the upper rail, likely aim for ahead of the sidepocket. then your comming for the 2 with a, if not right but much better angle. if i came up short for the good angle on the 3 id draw back to come off the same rail for the 3. mind you, cue ball in the center table tho moving around the six.

Instead of using right english or no english, I'd use high left english to go across behind where the 1 ball was. This will give you a sharper angle toward the side pocket. With less speed required, you will find yourself leaving an angle to the 2 ball allowing you to simply cut the 2 ball into the current corner and go up to the end rail with the cue ball, or draw from the 2 ball to the side rail. Your preference on which shot to use depending on interference by the 9 ball.

Either way, the left hand english of the 1 ball will prevent you from getting too far up table, blocking your shot on the 2 ball with the 9.

Angles shown on the diagram aren't as accurate as on a real table. This was my first time using the software. Either way, you get the gist.

Russ's will work too, but I'm not quite as accurate with the cue ball, so I avoid using rails for shape around the side pocket. My way will avoid the side altogether. Still, either will work.

Even tho it seems like the 9 prevents you from getting anything but the 'downhill' angle on the 2, you can actually put the cueball almost anywhere between its current position and "a"... the speed is not as touchy as it looks.

Depending on how straight you get, you can play a whip-it-real-good kinda stroke (low left 1 rail) or a wacky 3 rail position with low right, assuming the angle isn't so steep that hitting the 5 is unavoidable. You can also graze the 9 intentionally and play the CB off of it.

The margin for error is even larger if you make sure to widen the approach as Russ has it, but he's cheating the pocket pretty heavily to do that, and you don't want to risk the worst case of being straight+on the rail.

I'd say this is a 2 foot window, which isn't bad.
