I thought I would throw this out there in case anyones spindle goes out. I have a precise spindle and I called to see about getting it rebuilt. The guy told me it normally runs $1000-$1200 to get one rebuilt new bearings and so on, so I went on and sent it in. I got my estimate back today and it said $2900 so as you can imagine I was not very happy. I got to reading further and it says if I choose not to have them rebuild the spindle they are still going to charge me $400 for disassembly and it would be shipped back in pieces. I thought this was pretty crappy and thought I would let everyone else know. By the way I am in the market for a spindle if anyone has one they are not using. Just drop me a pm.
Thanks,

I have my precise Model #S 57 JIL rebuilt in 2006. Here is a list of what I had done;
Brushes replaced
Fan replaced
all three bearings replaced
slip ring brushes worn
Material was $602.00 and Labor was $510.00 Total = $1112.00
Hope this helps

If it's that much to repair, how f#$@ing much was it to buy originally?

No wonder you're not happy. Thats pretty cheezy of them. I can understand a small fee for r&d, but to send it back in pieces as well.

A new precise spindle is around $6000.:eek: :eek: :eek:
What type of bearings are in the spindle and is it the bearings that are the main concern?
The reason I ask is , often it is the ball bearing ball itself that wears out of round, while the races also wear, are usually not pitted. There are places that sell ceramic and steel ball bearing balls in the odd sizes required to recondition a bearing set. They are measured often in micron or thousands of millimeter from the nominal size.
For our engines we have balls in the plus 2 to plus 6 micron range. It may not sound much but really makes a difference in the total assembled clearance.

I currently have available two (2) Kavo 60,000 RPM spindles with air collet closure, a Kavo inverter set up to run either 1 or 2 of the spindles, 1/8" collets, mounting block, air regulator with switches, and 15' cables - $5,000. complete
