Ok for yrs I have wondered if a sports shrink would be helpfull in pool
I know thier are several pool books and tapes on concertration and self hypnosis I have read many with some succsess ,, being a addmitted head case I started paying a little more attention to pool players on a whole but also at pro level,, I believe many pro players and players on a whole could benifit from the use of a shrink.. after watching many matches at the SBE I am convinced this is somthing many may benifit from

Well I became the gunia pig and took that trip ,, and I have too say I am very pleased with the early returns it has made me much more focused and more importantly relaxed , whether or not it brings up my A game I dont know but it has brought up my B or C game 2 notches by not mentaly checking out, and the cost was less than 2 shafts:thumbup:

Has any one done this , do u see a benifit

bring on the cracks and the replys

I know a pro (you'd know his name) who did this and speaks very highly of it.

I have no problem with this at all. If one can afford it, why not. Hell, I'll try almost anything once.....as long as it doesn't involve hairy legs, or any real danger.

How did you manage to find the person you consulted with? Just curious.

There are a lot of folks in this world that could use help for daily living much less for a game. Of course you would never get them to admit it.

Yes. It works and helps anyone using it, as it does in any other sport requiring mental focus, self knowledge/awareness, and practical application. Sports psychology is a very well established practice.

In my experience, shrinks hand out pills. Psychologists try to offer useful help and advice... I think that would be far more appropriate.

When I was on the small bore precision rifle team at West Point, we had Sports Psychology come in and teach us self-hypnosis techniques...started with laying down, tensing every muscle in the body, then relaxing each muscle from the toes to the top of the head, in order. There were several preliminary relaxation lessons before you started with that. Once you got good at the muscle relaxing regimen, you could induce a hypnotic state of relaxation by merely gripping one hand tightly, relaxing it slowly and exhaling. Your concentration and senses would skyrocket. It really, really works.

I did not get to the self-hypnosis part but the patternd breathing and focusing in and out then to single point focus is working quite well
Also a quick tighten up and release in that moment of dispare stops the build up of tension ,, should have done it yrs ago ,

If anyone saw kevin Na playing golf over the weekend they saw someone who should run as fast as they can to the sports shrink.

I've read a few golf books which focus on the mental aspects of the game. being a golfer and a pool player, two very similar head games, I've used some of these principles in my pool game, and they do work. Pre shot routine, making a committed decision before you get down to shoot, thought process after a good and bad shot, all of these systems can work for pool. Anger management techniques, the angrier we get the worse our decision making process gets also...it's definitely a head game.
