I read something written by a player today who was disapointed that he did not win a competition he was recently involved with. Yes losing can cause anger, frustration, disapointment. However, we all win, we all lose...

"It is your response to winning and losing that makes you a winner or a loser."
— Harry Sheehy, athletic director

Obviously, he just lost. :P

Hi Jude,

Hey I understand when someone is frustrated from a loss....been there numerous times myself, we all have. I posted this quote as a reminder that there is a fine line between being disapointed, learning from and then letting go of the loss versus sour grapes and responding publically in a classless like manner.

There is a difference between losing, shaking your opponant's hand and walking away more determined than ever versus throwing a little tantrum,
disrespecting those involved and being reactionary.

like that old saying It takes a village to raise a child, well sometimes it takes a forum to raise a pool player.

:) Hope all's well in NYC.

I was just joking around. We've all been there. My typical response to a loss is to say, "Well played". For whatever reason, I find that easy to say and it allows both me and my opponent to move on without further conversation. It's easy to get frustrated but it's also imperative to understand losing is part of competition - something competitors often forget.

There is a saying that use to be prominent in the development phase of any sport. You learn and practice and then you compete.

"Competition builds Character"

There are those that believe that this phrase is very true in the beginning.

then it turns into

"Competition shows Character"

Win or Lose, either you show your positive side of being competitive or your negative side... it is up to you to decide.

"Competition shows Character"

Tom, let me reinforce what you said by using one slightly different word:

Competition reveals character.

Personality or ethical traits that had been hidden or concealed can suddenly be revealed in all their beauty or ugliness as a result of the challenges, elation, or disappointment stemming from competition.

thank you.. .that word does emphasize the saying much better
