Spray gun Vs Airbrush

I've never tried an airbrush, but I would guess it would be hard to get even coverage with the light, small spray pattern one provides. I use what they call a "jam gun" or "touch-up gun", which is a mini- version of a full-sized spray gun. It provides a smaller spray pattern than a full-sized gun, but a pattern large enough to give good coverage for spraying cues. When I spoke with several cuemakers concerning spray finishes, most of them had one recommendation in common: buy a good gun. I spend the $$ and bought a Sata Mini-Jet and couldn't be happier with it.

I use a Finex touch up gun. Also made by Sata! Just cost right about $100.00 instead of $600.00 that I paid for my Sata 6 years ago that is to big for the amount of cues I spray at one time.

Air brush guns are to small. They are designed to mist, not spray. I have tried all the guns thru the years, from high dollar to super cheap. The best I have found are Devilbis. Make sure when buying a touch up size gun, check the size of the tip it has. All guns are not created equal here. You do not want over a 1.3 mm nozzle. A 1.0 is best IMO. Shoots very fine spray, even atomization, and holds a tight pattern with little waste in over spray.
You can find them all over ebay at very reasonable prices. Here is the style I recommend.

I prefer the stainless or metal cup instead of the plastic jug type. Much easier to keep clean. You would also be wise to use a pressure regulator at the base of the gun to adjust incoming line pressure.
Hope this helps,

You could be right but I just bought a new Sata jam gun a month or so ago on the net and was told buy the salesman that the gun I was buying had a 1.0 needle and nozzle and that that was much to small for what I am spraying. He says the nozzle size is determined by what the material being used is and not the size of the gun. He said that a 1.0 or a little smaller was fine for lacquers but not for modern auto Urethane's. I use a PPG high solids Urethane and he said that the nozzle should be a minimum of 1.3 to 1.4. If I was going to use the 1.0 then I would have to add a reducer to thin the material and PPG recommends that no reducer should be used with this material. About 2 weeks ago I went across town to the auto paint store that I get my finish from. I got my finish and hardener and was talking to the counter man who does custom auto painting. I told him that I just had bought the Sata and what I paid for it and said it was a very good price. When I mentioned that it had a 1.0 nozzle he said that the nozzle was to small for Urethane's and questioned why I bought one with a nozzle that small. So that was two knowledgeable people in a row who told me that the 1.0 was to small of nozzle for the auto Urethane's.

I just bought a C.A. Technologies jr. and what an incredible finish it lays on, 1.2 needle and nozzle. The best thing about the gun is that it comes in a pack with a plastic cup, a stainless cup and an optional plastic cup that you can put in disposable plastic cups. Very little clean up. The disposable plastic cups are ok for all types of finishes. It is a sealed cup that you can even run upside/down. Incredible gun. PM me if you want to know of a supplier.
