Sorry if this has been addressed in another thread, but I did a search for spruce and shafts and only found one thread that mentioned a fellow had made a few, years ago, and there was no discussion re pros and cons. So, does anyone have any experience or opinions regarding the use of spruce for shafts. TIA

Spruce is lightweight, much softer than maple, and brittle. Not a great idea for shafts. IMO

Spruce is basically a variant of pine. Too soft and light. Plus the pitch pockets would cause it to be sticky.

Birch is an alternative. There is one particular type of birch, I forget the name, that has been used in the past for shafts. I think Schuler made them maybe someone remembers.
I just remembered, Bangkok birch.
