St. Louis looks like Detroit in '75. It's Daja vu, all over again. All K's, no C's

Now that Mr. Watchez has saw fit to mentioned the action that is happening here in St. Louis, Here's my 2¢.

I was in Detroit back in the 70's and I'm sure everyone has heard about the action there at that time.

Well, (only time will tell for sure), but St. Louis COULD become the next Detroit. All the key components are HERE & NOW. I can see it happening as every day & game takes place.

The Players Are Playing - The Backers Are Backing - But what it takes to really make it a true Detroit all over again, just happened not long ago.
A BACKER WAS BETTING ON ANOTHER BACKER PLAYING A PLAYER & A PLAYER WAS BETTING ON A PLAYER PLAYING A BACKER. In other words - Right now - It's just "TRUE ACTION".

And here is what is making it special -
I have been down every road of pool ever traveled for the last 40 years and I can honestly say - "AS FAR AS I CAN TELL" (and believe me, I'm a true skeptic), Every game & bet for the last 6 months has been "On The Square".

KNOW WHY? For the same reason that sometimes (much less than most people think) "Business" is considered. - $$$.
There is more $ to be won, made by treating everyone fair & square than there is to be made by ripping someone off and losing what is your best asset, INTAGERITY. Players, Backers, and even the sweaters are really realizing and appreciating that - WHAT GOES AROUND - COMES AROUND.

Here is the Best Part though -
Right Now, Right Here, A PLAYER OR A BACKER can finally do something that I have been hoping would happen for quite some time now -
GET MORE ACTION, WIN MORE $, AND GET A MUCH FAIRER SHAKE THAN BY GOING TO ONE OF THE MANY SCUM SUCKING CASINO'S THAT ARE RUINING POOL ACTION NATIONWIDE.

Time to start takeing out the tape recorder, and camcorder and get some of this on tape. Then in 20 years write a book on it. Hell i even got a title '21st century ACTION'. Just like 'Hustler Days'. I wish i coulda seen half the things in that book take place.

FXSkAter
...wishing British Columbia was the next big ACTION spot. lol

You don't say what place in St. Louis the action is at? Thanks,
Grady

Grady - I think it is best if I send you a Private Message. Just like Detroit, there is no need to advertise.

OHB,
That's too bold of a statement without any kind of info. Is there a chance to win 50-100 thousand from a few people?

Yes, If ..............

I wasn't in Detroit with Oldhasbeen but.......this has to be pretty close.

Congratulations on the Mo 9 Ball win, Tom.

Still a lot of action in Detroit and I am not talking about the Lions or Dead Wings. As some one else said no need to advertise the place or places. Build it and they will come.

In a way - Your Right!

I guess your right, in a way Steve. In about '75 I had - A PIECE OF A PIECE OF A SIDE BET, AND MY END CAME OUT TO $17k.

Now that type of action isn't here yet but the circumstances are in place for that kind of action to develop in the near future.

Tom,
I know its hard to remember so much stuff over the years but there were so many different groups here in Detroit and each one was always trying to bust another one. It really seemed like it was rarely about the money but who could fuck who out of what, doing whatever they could, so they could be King of the playground for the time being.

St. Louis, or any other town would need the gangsters, drug dealers, thieves, legit money etc. etc. all to come to one place all the time. Then they need to get screwed a little here and there by each other to get things stirred up, nothing gets the juices flowing like wanting to get back at somebody that took you off.

Detroit was fortunate to have all that and more back then....the Chicago guys coming in, Cleveland crew, New York guys, the Southern money, every road player coming thru taking a shot............................plus no CASINOS to compete for the gambling money. Thats probably been the biggest downfall for pool. Since casinos started opening within hours drives and closer of everyone, the crap games stopped, the gard games stopped, the illegal money found a new home. Back then it was the racetrack and the poolroom.

Its been a shame to see guys that I thought were pretty sharp, ones that ran crap games, card games, businesses...people that were always on the house side of the table...all of a sudden switch to the other side like they were going to bust the casino!!! AND KNOW THE CASINO AINT GOING TO TAKE A SHOT BACK AT THEM LIKE IN A POOL ROOM...you can't win if they never ever play YOUR game. They need to all be shut down except for Vegas but thats another topic.

Dandy reply:
But the casino is the dumbest gamble you can make. They don't build billion dollar casinos on winners, they build them off losers. Look around any casino closely and observe, 99% are getting cleaned out. It's for tourists and suckers. Here is the best one yet, if you can win honestly, just be better than them at blackjack and begin to take them big over and over, they ban you out and publish your picture world wide. You are only welcome to lose, if you can win, your action is not desired.

Steve - I couldn't agree with you more.

Everything you've said is accurate & true. DETROIT WAS MAGIC and will probably never be duplicated. For me it was like getting my doctorate in Pool. It was so unique. I'll never forget the little old man who went to the Jewish deli at 5 am and brought back the fresh/hot bagels. He would stop at the FBI surveillance van parked across the street and give them some hot coffee & bagels also. I'll also never forget Gil (the proprietor) who used to be in The Purple Gang and if he got wound up he would tell some great stories of running booze while being chased & shot at by the bad & good guys at the same time.

Ahh - Those were the days my friend!

I'll guess I'll have to start saying St. Louis is starting to look "JUST A LITTLE" like Detroit in '75.

There were a lot of reasons why Detroit was what it was. Firstly, the type of gambler or pool sucker or two that get people excited when a new place begins to have action, Well, Detroit had forty or fifty like that and better, plus Jew Paul and Rosie.
An average loss for Rosie was a half a million dollars. The rack boys made $10,000 a week. I could go on but what's the point? I just don't believe there'll ever be another Detroit.
Everything Steve Lomako says is gospel. He and I saw it and lived it along with Steve's father-in-law, Cornbread Red.
Every pool player who was anybody visited The Rack.

Detroit was before my time. I was born in 76. But This thread is what makes pool so nastalgic. Just like stories of Ruth, cobb, joe jackson, and mantle, make baseball so nastalgic. Just like Hustler days. This thread is what makes me drive 35 minutes to a poolhall just becuase it is THE pool hall to go to. Thanks, OHB, Grady, Steve. I can never get tired of hearing the stories you folks bless on us.
Thanks,
Jordan

To those who were there, was George Rood part of the Detroit action scene? I'v heard many say he was a very special player.

A rack boy making 10 g's a week, give me a break here, I just did not fall off a hay wagon. You see the problem with these old timers is every time they tell the story, the fish grows, they embelish it and one day the perch is a blue whale.
