Hey , your pretty smart. I'd bet cue makers can go to farms where they can cut their own maple .

Cuemakers make their own rings, why not buttcaps ? I find it rather strange that folks with lathes want to buy things they can make on their lathes
Dave <-- not a cuemaker but owns a few lathes
Stainless steel is pretty heavy, and being on the butt cap, has the greatest fulcrum effect on the balance of the cue.
One of the more difficult parts of building a cue is keeping the butt light enough so that the balance point stays forward. Many/Most players want the balance point of the cue just under their grip hand or even slightly in front.
At least, that is my experience and opinion.
Others may have a different viewpoint.

We know of at least one cuemaker who, in fact, does just that.

They're not ss.
They are aluminum.
This is just an example , it is a Viking import , their description is SS , i wouldn't argue that some were aluminum.

Seen Lucasi and others with them.
I doubt that they are made from barstock. My guess is they are from press sheet and polished. Are these available from domestic suppliers , or available from any source to American cue repair people ? Have any of you used one ? I like the look on some cues.

If you are after 1 or 2, then barstock is the cheaper way.
Outlaw cues uses something like that too. The real question is who do you want your cues to remind people of? Lucasi and Viking or Richard Black and Tim Scruggs?
