Are these available from domestic suppliers , or available from any source to American cue repair people ? Have any of you used one ? I like the look on some cues.

Hey , your pretty smart. I'd bet cue makers can go to farms where they can cut their own maple .

Cuemakers make their own rings, why not buttcaps ? I find it rather strange that folks with lathes want to buy things they can make on their lathes

Dave <-- not a cuemaker but owns a few lathes

Stainless steel is pretty heavy, and being on the butt cap, has the greatest fulcrum effect on the balance of the cue.

One of the more difficult parts of building a cue is keeping the butt light enough so that the balance point stays forward. Many/Most players want the balance point of the cue just under their grip hand or even slightly in front.

At least, that is my experience and opinion.

Others may have a different viewpoint. :)

I think the thickness of the stainless cap wouldn't make it much heavier than the plastics used . The main problem would be if the person banged their cue but on the floor when aggravated and might dent the cap.

We know of at least one cuemaker who, in fact, does just that.

More power to him , but he is waiting a while for it to dry and cure . I read all the time of custom cue makers buying full splice blanks for butts from outside sources . My original question was more about replacing a plastic cap with a stainless , and whether any domestic makers had used a stainless cap , most are on Asian cues.

It was to me just a question .

Look at Speedy Metals. That's where I get my rough stock metals. They carry everything, rods, tubes, you name it.

Hmmmm

I am going back to my cue lathe and make a cue. ............(Edit) I'm back............... Two cues with a final cut later. OK, I couldn't let it go.
Balance is done per cue....materials, dimensions of the cue. shaft weights....... SS butt ring might work on a snakewood front....on a 24oz cue. To balance. It's about building a cue.

If you want a cheap warped but still pretty cue go to an asian. Enjoy and brag it up to your friends. It ain't a USA artisan made cue.
I bought alot of them 5 years ago (sold them all) before I chose to make 100% American Made cues for myself. I could never afford my lust for custom cues. So I had to leard how to fill my cases for myself. Now I have ALOT of perfectly straight custom made cues made right here in America made by me. My friends and pool friends are amazed. And have given a few away. Mostly it was to prove I could make something perfect.
Sadly some people will by 5 - 200.00 crap cues to say thay have 5 cues...instead of 1 valuable cue.
Again this is just a sad rant from someone who is sick of people thinking they can find value outside our shores. Buy American if you are one.

Outlaw cues uses something like that too. The real question is who do you want your cues to remind people of? Lucasi and Viking or Richard Black and Tim Scruggs?

This is just an example , it is a Viking import , their description is SS , i wouldn't argue that some were aluminum.

Seen Lucasi and others with them.

Im pretty sure Viking cues are American made, not imported. McDermott started importing their star and lucky line of cues from china and i would never, i mean never buy one of those. I think player cues are higher quality than that trash.

I doubt that they are made from barstock. My guess is they are from press sheet and polished.

If you are after 1 or 2, then barstock is the cheaper way.

Thx conetip , i didn't think the wall was thick either , it is probably a stamped part , like automobile body parts . Machining each one out of bar stock would probably make them expensive.

Lexi , no disrespect meant , but i'd want my cue to look like i want . I wonder if the first cue maker to use a metal joint collar caught heck ?I was asking because i might have one put on an existing cue . The stainless or white collar tends to contrast the butt wood and puts the look of the wood in a different light . I prefer lighter stains , but a bocote with a stainless butt cap would look good to me.
