Will a stainless sleeve on a wood to wood joint make the hit a bit stiffer. Reason I ask is I had an older Mcdermott in the shop for a repair and it had a stainless sleeve and 3/8 x 10 pin into wood on the shaft with phenolic ring. Schulers used to do something similar. Thanks for any input.

I equate stiffness with the shaft taper. Since wood/wood joints tend to have a softer hit than a SS steel joints...my experience is that adding a thin-walled SS steel sleeve to a wood/wood joint tends to make the hit a bit crisper...but not necessarily harder. Currently my favorite joint when done as a 1/2" or 3/4" joint and big pin.

Define " STIFFER " .
Schuller used aluminum I think. He wanted the least weight at the joint.
I have 4 Schulers; one with a composite collar, one with an aluminum collar and two with the SS collar. There is no noticeable difference that I would attribute to the collar instead of the weight differences in each. The SS collars are very thin. Ray said they were mostly cosmetic. In his use, I would agree.
