Staking a top player in a tournament

I see many different agreements that have been made over the years.

I see a lot of top players just sitting on the sidelines waiting for someone to give them the best deal for sponsorship. I understand that, I truly do and don't begrudge anyone for doing that. Often, I see talented players just not playing in events or not "buying back in" etc. and that could be for a variety of different reasons but I'm just wondering if top players (the ones that CAN CASH in tournaments) would be interested in a corporation that provided ENTRY FEES ONLY to play in pool tournaments. The split would be right down the middle, with the entry fees forgiven and part of the corporation's responsibility.

The prize money would be paid to the sponsoring entity and sent to the corporation's treasurer and then as soon as that money was received, it would then be PayPal'd to the sponsored player.

This corporation wouldn't be for bangers like me but for players who either don't have sponsors who provide more or for players who don't like appearing like they are looking for a handout.

I realize that players would want more than this and it would be nice if they could get it. It sure seems like there are a lot of players just sitting on the sidelines.

I was discussing this problem with players sitting out of events and while this isn't the best looking gift horse, it is a possible answer to players not being able to afford entry fees. A player can often find lodging with pals or other players and eating, well, we all have to do that anyway. Transportation, same thing, some can get a ride with other players or fans.

Sure, it's not a juicy deal for a player but it's a deal. Is it fair to the player? Is it fair to the corporation? I don't know, I just don't like seeing players sitting on the sidelines when they actually have a chance of making money.

Please don't share with me all of the juicy deals that players get. I know all about them? Sometimes they're not as juicy when you find out the intimate details as they often leak out.

Buy backs can get pretty expensive with multiple disciplines and back to back tournaments etc. Maybe that is holding players back from playing in events and maybe footing the whole bill for players is what's holding "sponsors" back.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?

Staking

Dear AZ poster,

I am interested in what you have posted. I have been "waiting" on the sidelines for many years. Have never had a sponsor. I feel my game is highly competitive.

I am currently in the process of seeking external-industry sponsorship, e.g. Verizon, for one. Until then would like to chew the fat with you on what you have brought up.

Please contact me at rlnslo@hotmail.com so I can introduce myself to you (achievements, image/brand, goals, education, experience, tournament schedule, etc.). Thank you.

Boogeyman,
This is currently just an informational gathering thread at the moment. Currently, there is no funded corporation. Since you are subscribed (because you posted in it) to the thread, you will receive updates as they become available.

Should a corporation ever be formed, I would be happy to contact you.

Best regards,

Not Enough Money In Tournaments for Sponsorship

Joey, Francisco has made 56k this year and the year is half over.
26k is not much to live on.

The problem is IRS gets there share off the top.
I am expected to pay entry fee and room for free?

Francisco has been on fire here at California Billiard Club in Mountain View California.
He has been winning everything.
By the time I pay for room and entry fee, there is not much left.
So I just let Francisco keep what is left over.

So what would a Sponsor make if he had a lesser player.
The sponsor would go broke.

A sponsor would be better off woking at McDonalds and make a sure 50 bucks.

I think the sponsor's side of the deal because of the reason you listed is not the best side to be on, even if you are only paying for the player's entry fee. Who knows if the player will show up, if they will buy back in or if they will quit if they lose the first match etc.

Lots of downsides and not too many upsides for either party. :(

It's simple arithmetic. If there was net money to be made players would not sit on the sidelines and would not seek any "sponsor" to share it with. They would go it alone and keep all the spoils. Unfortunately the current spoils do not pay the bills.

So sponsorship needs to have other benefits for the sponsor or no deal. Often it's enough reward for the sponsor to buy one's way into the inner circle of the top level player's culture to which there would be no other access. Hang out, rub elbows and spend baby spend!

JC,
You make excellent points!

Now you have me wondering what inducements a player could offer sponsors for getting involved in a small investment?

Perhaps if a player could offer something that the sponsor might perceive as value, there could be a win-win relationship in the player/sponsor relationship, which is the best kind of course.

It's terrible

It's absolutely terrible, that a great, top level player, can't make a living at their craft. With what football players make, ...it's just unbelievable. Anything pool=go broke.
What a shame, I also can't believe that some organization, or entity can't do something to revitalize it. Can't understand. Pool is a non-profit organization.

Joey.. Just buy the player you like a steak dinner. That way he/she can put down the " I will shot pool for food" sign for a day.
