Starcade Billiards Tournament Update

Just dropped in the office/Internet area of the Hampton Inn and wanted to say Hi.

The tournament in Fort walton Beach Florida is in its second day with such notables as Scotty Townsend, John Schmidt, Tommy Kenneedy, David Broxson, Hennessey & JIm Jennings, oh yeah and JoeyA is hanging on by the skin of his teeth in the loser's bracket. Road partner and riding shotgun is Reuben "The Rake" got knocked out the tournament last night.

There were 103 players with about $6600 in prize money. I think everyone who came bback today will get a piece of the pie.

If you have ever thought about playing in a well run and pleasant atmosphere tournament you should try the Andy Grubbs Memorial tournament. Andy used to post on RSB and may have posted on AZ as well.

Oh, God I forgot Tony Crosby and a couple of his compatriots are still in the thick of it. James Roberts maybe..... There are so many good players, I know only half of their faces. We didn't leave the tournament room until 2:30 a.m. last night and are back up waiting to go to the pool room when it opens at 9:00 am . We are just gluttons for punishment.

I got knocked into the loser's bracket by a smooth playing Mitch Yarborough who played consistently well in our match. I had some good fortune in the first couple of matches and made sure my opponents had some fun too, but not too much. ;-)

The Okinawa Japanese restaurant of FT Walton had some excellent Hibachi food and entertainment.

Up and coming cuemaker Bobby Jones of Gulfport, MS was joined with Steve, Greg, David Walters, all from the Gulf Coast area. Bobby Jones is building some very nice cues. They not only look good but play well. If I didn't just receive my new Bender I would purchase one for regular play although I have seen one cue he built that could easily be seen as collectible.

Bobby lurks here but does not post as of yet. Lure that man out in the open. He is a nice guy and builds some nice cues. He's wealthy so he doesn't need the money so he can build them for free if he wants. LOL

There was no gambling that I saw.

Josh Hilliard, Tony Crosby and JoeyA are AZers who played. Tony won the tournament and Josh placed rather high but I left early after getting knocked out of the tournament because of the long ride back to New Orleans.

It seems that there are lots of very good players who come back year after year for this tournament and I can see why.

David Broxton played well and was still in the winner's bracket when I left. His lady friend, a tall slender blonde was playing very well and I think either placed in the money or came one game short of the money as I did.

I am thinking that besides the smooth running of the tournament, the wide range of players that play in it, the race to 9 and the way the owners cater to the player's needs, them paying 25% of the field has to have something to do with the high numbers of players that participate. The fact that there are NO GREEN FEES, no quarters/dollars for each game played, NO TOUR FEES, NO REGISTRATION FEES and in general NO HIDDEN FEES and NO FEES OF ANY KIND probably has a little to do with the large participation.

We are going to start something here in New Orleans shortly at Buffalo Billiards, maybe a monthly tournament adding between 600 and 1000 dollars with RACES TO 7. The details are being worked out as I type.

The owner wants to get some to players traveling through on a regular basis to test their mettle on the Pro Cut Diamond Tables but I think he wants to get the stake horses in town and get some action rolling around New Orleans again.

Happy Mardi Gras. Lil Sal is riding in the ZULU parade and has two thousand coconuts in case any pool players are out there. He's on float number 4 with the mayor.

Thanks for the update! How do you like your new bender? I just ordered one and should receive it next month. I played with one several years ago and really liked the way the it played and finally decided to spend the money

Darry, I have purchased three Benders so far and have loved all of them. They hold their resale value very well. In fact they actually increase in value. I sold my second Bender because I just didn't like keeping two. Now that I have bought another one, I am selling the first one that I bought. No sense in me keeping more than one playing cue. His cues play just fine and they all play similarly. I have played with his cues for about 5 years now.

I appreciate the extra precision in which he makes his inlays and points.

I'm sure you will love yours.

Joey, that sounds great to me. Make sure Buff has them on a Saturday. Sunday is no good. Don't worry about Slidell. Their monthly deals have been going downhill, and the equipment has gotten pretty bad. I'd love to come over on a Saturday and contribute a little of my meager earnings to all you snarly-toothed hustlers. You'd get the Gulfport and Ocean Springs players too. Skeeter's isn't doing squat.

Buff doesn't want to horn in on Two Sister's tournament. He really is considerate of the rest of the pool room businesses but seems to be that way with everyone. I'm sure something is going to happen soon and will keep you posted. I was over by Bobby Jones yesterday having a little cue work done.

JoeyA, is Mitch Yarborough related to Ronnie Yarborough? Ronnie and I played a few times in the 90s in Jax and one time at Starcade. Ronnie's got alot of gamble in him and played really good back in the 90s.
