Stats -- Shane Van Boening vs. Fedor Gorst 10-Ball Race to 120, August 2024

I got the impression that table was abnormally bouncy. I suspect the break and run percentage would have been drastically higher if that wasn’t the case.

Could you post a long list of the score line after each game?
I hope you weren't kidding. SVB - Gorst:

Shane was making 3 balls on the break a lot when he had break and runs.
That’s the balls dressing up better.

Shane imo has the best break I’ve ever seen in pool in my life. I’ve seen other guys who have had a good month or year but nobody is close to Shane’s consistency and standing the test of time.

Like anything in pool who’s the best is difficult to pin point and there’s always a difference of opinion. Having noted that. Imo Shane has the best break ever and likely will always be known for that.

That break is enough to give him an edge where he might not have one otherwise.

It’s great to see the action and hopefully more of it.

I think Shane made six balls on a break…..is this true?
I’ve seen it in the past. Idk about this session.

One thing is certain, watching Shane play now is watching pool they will be talking about in 50 years. Kinda like Bugs playing banks, to this day his name comes up all the time. Things like this don’t happen all the time in pool.

We are in a good place & time for pool.

Any stats on the number of paid streamers? (and unpaid if that's available)
While I’m not a fan of pay walls. I get it as a biz man. There are costs that must be covered. I hope they did well enough that they are interested in another stream. IMO they will play stream or no stream. Idk if they got paid “show up” money.

We’ll never see the numbers/ what I have noticed over the last 15 years. Nobody has got rich streaming pool. That’s too bad, I like to see people do well.

This is very interesting, I read the thread post by post to get the feel of the match. This confirms it.

What’s notable to me is if they played a race to 100 SVB would have lost by a good bit.

It was my theory the whole time the longer format being 120 was a bad idea for Shane. When in fact it won him the session. To wake up that deep in after 3 days is just King Kong strong, possibly the hardest thing in pool to do-come out of a hole down the stretch in a super long session. Wow!

The question I have now is whose idea was 120? Or was there any discussion of the length? Seems there would have been. Who wanted 120? I’m gonna try and find out. If Shane asked for it and used it to win-wow!

I couldn’t have been more wrong in my thinking as it played out.

I’m a numbers guy. Somethings the numbers don’t show, other things the numbers prove. Which is always interesting in any sport. And makes for good discussions.

This is the reason I’m on AZB now. Good discussions about good things in pool. Agree or disagree is ok. Just being civil and sweating action is the nuts!

the end result was within the margin of error for any fargo prediction between the two. i think mr jewett has been trying to explain that a couple of times. so makes sense fedor could have won at 100.

During the live stream they mentioned that a TickTocker was recasting the feed in another country and had over 1 million views going.

Dude I swear if someone asked how often did each player fart and did the fart happen as the player left he table and did the incoming player win that game you would provide the data. And we would absolutely believe it

Had they played a race to 100 then Shane could have won that as well. Swings happen and it so happened that Fedor reached 100 first but it could have just as easily been Shane who got to 100 first.

Shane has lost with big leads and won from big deficits. They all have.

By the same token sometimes a top player will win a race to 10 by a large margin against another top player one day and lose by the same margin another day.

That's why Fargo likes to have a lot of games to smooth out the variance.

These two players are five points apart in Fargo. Functionally even in skill. Fedor's advantage imo are his age and that he came up in an era with many 800+ Fargo rated players and Shane came up in an era where he didn't have to face as many 800+ players.

But both players are fanatical about practicing and staying sharp. Shane maybe not as much as when he was Fedor's age but still more than most players his age imo.

This was the classic young bull versus old bull match and the older bull proved he can still get there. Next up Josh Filler maybe?

Fwiw though, I think it takes extraordinary grit to make up a large deficit on the last day between equal players. It's so easy to give up when the odds say that the player who is down by a large margin has virtually no chance.

I have seen it happen many times and if it were a race to 40 with one player spotting the other one 10 games I would have to bet on the player going to 30. When Alex beat Shane though he was like 13 games down going into the final day and I bet $100 on him just for fun and he pulled even around 94 going to 100 iirc. That was a sweet $100 win for sure but would result in a loss most of the time I think.

It’s because of players like Bugs that Vern Elliot was called The White Hope.

Thank you for your effort on these stats. That being said, some of them were very confusing. If you want a hand at dumbing then down a little, email me. That was a great match and concluded how I thought it would. Maybe 50,000 toothpicks weren't enough to get Fedor's attention. Or maybe he should have been practicing instead of sleeping.

At Large is a national pool treasure. Please create a website with all your stats. I will subscribe and pay!
yes, on a pool treasure, no, on the break away. This boat runs strong with its many engines.

Oh I don't want him to be away from AZB. I just want a comprehensive website where all the stats he has ever gathered are available and searchable and am willing to pay for that. I like sites where I can kind of swim through data sometimes.

I can get that,
couple of times just hanging around the track late, catch what looked like handicappers, carrying binders, heavy looking brief cases going for a drink.

Congratulations on offering to take Fedor and Shane and give up the field for the Open. These two are superstars in pool right now.

Can you believe this? Both of them! Wow.

I would have taken 3-1 on the $ for something small. Wasn’t ever a serious prop bet.

I liked fedor by a hair in the race and here too-until I watched a couple of SVB’s matches. I kinda had a feeling he’d get to the finals. I bet on him today real small.

Probably gonna bet on SVB tmr.

I was in a plane all day. I just got home, didn’t see the matches yet

Take care
