I was going through my old Swift case and I kept all the envelopes etc. from the pro or pro caliber type tournaments I played in and cashed well in.

There is a tourney list from the old Steepleton days (Lexington, KY) and it's from I'd guess 12-14 years ago.

93 people at this tourney, check out the list of names who showed up.

Eddie Adams
Denver Barger
Brian Groce
Bucky Bell
Eric Durbin
Dee Adkins
Troy Frank
Cornbread Red
Danny Brown
AJ Gallow
Mike Painter
Eddie Jones
Ralph Black
Steve Cook
Art Rivera
Jamie Green
Monday
Kevin Tomlin
Rick Brown
Les Blevins
Dave Favor
David Naiser

There are more, but what a field for a monthly tourney. I did really well in this one.

Anyone else have good memories of that tourney?

I used to go to some of those Steepleton tournaments. I remember Buddy Hall, Jimmy Reid, all the guys from Louisville (Bryan Roberts, Billy Peay), Cincinnati (Jack Hines, Gary Spaeth), Mark Jarvis and Breedlove from Indianapolis, and a very young Shannon Daulton who always came in challenging anyone and everyone to play. This was back around 1991-92.

Thanks for the reply.

Ya those guys came down there lots, just surprised at how they got 90 or 100 players almost every time.

Those were awesome tournaments...... I have a ton of good Stepletons stories! Calvin Gulley that was the manager there was a jewel.... The tournament was good but it was a great action spot.

I went quite a few times. I remember standing up a lot. Not much room for sitting.

Ralph Black, Gary Speath, Joe Brown, Ricky and Tommy Carelli, a young Jason Miller and quite a few B+ players out of Southern Ohio use to show up for the summer time monthlys.

Lots of great times in Lexington KY with the Danny's All Star tournaments, at the Holiday Inn. Held at least once a year and sometimes twice. Huge $20,000 added PRO events.

Lexington was a HOT pool spot in the late 80s and early 90s

I might have played in this tourney. I played in several. I can remember Dave Favor and Bucky Bell playing in the finals. I think it might have been this tournament because Dave Favor was only in Lexington area for a while.

was calvin the guy who

had the voice that did NOT need a megaphone to be heard, even in steepleton's?
great times had there at steepleton's and danny allstar billiards on winchester road/pike. hated to see them go away. i miss the continental inn tourney's as well.

Yeah! LOL His voice was so low and loud that a megaphone wouldn't do him justice! 200+ people packed in there and he would just stand on a chair and within one word the room would go silent.... The thing that always struck me was how clear he talked when he was that loud.

I hated it when I heard they closed it down, that was a cash cow of a spot for us.....

I miss the Lexington All-Stars tourneys as well....

Here is one of about 20 good Steepletons stories I have....

Bartram and I are on the road and stop by to see Calvin for our every couple months visit. Calvin would ask for what he thought he needed and we would oblige then Fatty would outrun it. Chris was giving him the 7 and last 3 IIRC and has him stuck a couple thousand.

In walks this big ole country boy with bib overalls, white t-shirt and dirty ball cap. I had a line on this guy that said he was a very big maryjane grower and that he LOVED to gamble.... I ask him "What do you you want to do here?" and he says that Calvin can't win, he's stuck already, etc.... Chris comes up and says not to bother, this guys isn't going to lose anything with Calvin being stuck like this. I tell him to do his job and I'll do mine, lol. So I start moving... Lets flip a quarter for a hundred.... Lets pull high card for a hundred... Lets play Tonk... (Don't know how to even play Tonk, LOL) Lets flip quarters to the spot.... I pull out almost every move I have and this guy won't budge! So I create a new gamble.... Out front down the street about a hundred yards is a traffic light where a little traveled street comes in. This light is green probably 95% of the time. So I say "I'll just bet you a hundred that the traffic light outside is red!!!" He says "GAWD DAYUM, you really do want to gamble don't you!!!" He runs for the door giggling the whole way.... THE LIGHT IS RED!!! LOL He pays me the hundred and then promptly ASKS ME "What do you want to do here?" motioning toward Chris and Calvin.... I say "You tell me..." He says bet the hundred.....

We end up winning close to 5 off Calvin and as we're driving down the road Chris asks how much we won on the side and I make him guess. He guesses $150.... Not even close.... $1400... Off of a red traffic light.....

Have a lot of great memories of Steepleton's. By the way I saw Calvin at the Derby City Classic last weekend. He has a remodeling and Billiard store business in Lexington. He was definitely action! I staked players and was a big player in the calcutta. Bought 17 year old Mike Patton in the calcutta for $50 and cashed for $1500 (he and his Dad took half). He defeated Jason Miller in the finals and went on the win the BCA Junior 9 Ball Championship in 1996 and finished 2nd in 97. I will relay some more stories later.

This one was Brian and Denver in the finals of the winners bracket. I got 5-6

Old post, but I will add a couple memories to it.

I am unsure of the year but it was likely around 91-92 and I was in college at UK, sorta.

We got a transfer student in from Oklahoma. Tulsa. Turned out he played pretty sporty. So I took him out to Steepletons and put him in one of the bigger tournaments there. He was pretty unknown so we got him in for around $150ish if I remember right (entry fee and calcutta). I put myself in also, but I can't play a lick and was just messing around for fun (I might have been the first one out - I think Calvin's girlfriend Lisa beat me - but just barely). There were several good players there, Bell, Breedlove, Naiser, etc. My buddy was using the name Alex Smith, nobody can pronounce his last name since its Russian.

Anyhow he's playing pretty good and ends up the winner on the winners side and Breedlove comes out of the losers side. So Breedlove has to win two sets. I think Alex won the first game and then broke the second and had to play safe. George runs to his case and grabs his jump cue and comes back and spears this shot and gets perfect shape and then hes out, and out again and again and again. I think it's like 4-1 and George finally has to play a safe and he comes up short and leaves a pretty easy shot, so Alex gets up and he gets down over the shot and I notice that the table is shaking, I'm thinking earthquake! Turns out it isn't an earthquake it's his bridge hand, it is shaking so badly it makes it look like the whole damn table is moving, so he fires the shot missing the pocket by a good foot. George had him so rattled with that jump shot he couldn't calm down. Anyhow George won that set and the next. Alex might have gotten a few more tries at the table but George just locked him down and didn't really make an error. Anyhow, Alex ended up second, and we split a decent amount. Splitting first place would have been a lot nicer but hey...George earned it.

As it happens Nine ball was not Alex's best game, he preferred One Pocket or Golf on the Snooker table with the big balls. He would often boast he would play anyone in the country on the Snooker table with the big balls and his rules. (which i don't remember). It was the same day that he got 2nd in that tourney that MaCready shows up and they end up making a game of Golf, something like $40 a game and $5 a hickey. I think Alex started off spotting Keith a hole, which didn't last but two games and they agreed to play even. Playing even Alex had a few games ahead and they upped the bet some, and then he won a few more. Then, there was a short...restroom.. break and Keith played remarkably better after that. After a couple hours they were basically even. I think Alex ended quitting Keith while he was a game ahead or maybe Keith quit. I forget exactly how they ended but it was pretty close to being a waste of time for both of them. Fun to watch though.

Anyhow Steepletons was always fun and Calvin was(is) a great guy and you could hear him anywhere in the building when he raised his voice and he ran those tourney's well.

I wish I could have played better but those guys were interested in stringing together 3/4/5 racks at a time....while I was trying to string 3/4/5 balls together at a time.

Fun Times
