If that rule were to be followed, where does that put the lead foot ?

I think you need to put it where you satisfy the goals of a good stance.

There may be some who say (for example) that the left foot (for a right-handed player) must be pointed parallel to the cue stick. I think such a detailed, rigid approach is harmful.

I guess the next question would be: What are the goals of a good stance?

I think a good stance would put the cue, eye and grip in line with the aiming line and still be comfortable.
