Sterling Wave Case Review

The interior looks great. What about the hardness of the exterior of the case?

If I bump into a table holding the case, is there a hard shell exterior that will take the impact?

Yes. The creator of Instroke Cases, long known for their protective qualities, is the same man that is now the case designer at Sterling Gaming...none other than John Barton. The difference between the Sterling cases and the Instroke is that John has figured out how to make them lighter in weight, with a smaller footprint, at price points for every budget. John and Sterling stand behind every case they produce, and any 'issues' are generally handled in a very timely manner.

thanks for a great review! i will surely be looking at this know.i was originally looking for a predator case just for the reason that they "cradle" your cues with a good fit like other high-end cases soes-can't afford them though! lol

check ebay, $144 shipped on there. all colors and sizes

Please check the feedback on some of these sellers. There has been some instances, if memory serves, where folks were unhappy as the seller did not actually have the case in stock, and needed to order it.

I did a quick search but couldn't find a manufacturer's website for them... Anyone have it? I was curious if there was an option to choose my own colors? Hoping for a black/dark-red combo.

Thanks for the in-depth review... I was looking at some of the other cases out there, but I can't possibly justify $6-800 for a case; although if I win the lottery, I wouldn't have a problem with that. heh

Hello,

I am the manufacturer/designer of these cases. There is no online option yet for you to choose your own colors but we can make a case for you with the colors you want and ship it over with our next shipment.

You can place that order through Cuesight or any other retailer who is a Sterling Gaming dealer.

You can converse with me on color choices.

My email is jb@jbideas.com

Thanks,

John Barton

Does anyone know the depth/width of one of these cases, including pockets (that is, the footprint)? I'm wondering if it will fit in my locker at the pool room.

JimS:

Definitely -- not just one, either (believe it or not, when I was playing in three different leagues per week a while back, I'd carry my own measles ball [for big tables] and genuine Aramith green-"S"-logoed magnetic ball [for bar tables]. That bottom pocket can probably fit more than just two cue balls -- probably three comfortably (albeit, stacked on top of each other, and you'd have to pull the zippers down the sides accordingly depending on which cue ball you wanted to remove).

Hope that's helpful!

That certainly answers Coco Cboys questions about a Pro Justa Bridge fitting in the bottom pocket. Thanks!

I am not sure what you mean by "cradle". The current Predator cases do not offer a well padded interior and the cues are held loosely in a synthetic lined straight walled cavity. The cues are allowed to slide and bang against the side of the case. The current Predator cases with use either a foam core interior which is exactly the same as those found on most cheap cases or they use a thin liner with little padding. They look great but the protection is lacking in my opinion.

They are also way overbuilt. In order to achieve the "look" that the Predator cases have the factory essentially built two complete skins, that's two layers of vinyl, over the interior core. This is a classic design mistake to make function follow form - or to put it another way to sacrifice the user's comfort for the sake of looking good.

The problem is that Predator's designs looked great on paper but the factory they chose to make the cases didn't really know how to execute that design and keep the case user friendly. In my opinion, which is of course biased to the extreme. :-)

The first generation Predator cases were designed by me and they did have padded interiors that cradled and protected the cues like all my cases have.

I am sure that if you get a chance to compare our two cases you find that the Wave Case offers far more protection and utility and comfort for a lot less than the Predator cases.

As an example - the Predator Ikon 3x5 is larger than our 4x8 and weighs more than double. And it's $349 compared to our $180 (street price $150).

Granted both cases look very different. As I said the Predator has a cool look to it. But if it's real protection and "cradling" you are looking for then no one takes care of your cue like my interiors do.

You can find our Sterling Wave cases at www.billiardwarehouse.com, www.cuesight.com and any Sterling dealer.

Our tubes are made of PVC and can easily handle bumps. In fact I jump on them to test them and make sure that they can withstand both acute strikes as well as broad impact.

ooops

I have just uploaded the catalog draft which has the dimensions of each case.

The pocket heights were not included (something to add on the next draft).

They are, I believe, 1.5" high.

I have the older leather Predator case. It has a decent amount of padding under the lid. What's the padding like on these Sterlings?

I'm very interested. These are going to be the price-performance kings of cases. The thing I really like about the 3x4 is that it's only 1/10" wider than a 2x4. But you have the option to store one more butt. More efficient use of space.

For me, there are times I take a playing cue, 2 shafts, a break cue 1 shaft and a jump shaft. Case filled perfectly. Everything I need, nothing I don't. But there are times I take 2 playing cues, each 1 shaft, 1 break cue 1 shaft and jump shaft. That doesn't work in a 2x4.

I've had my wave, 4/8 in the tan & brown, for about a week now.

STILL lovin' it.

LOVE how I can put my Hagar extension inside, makes for very clean travel.

The only gripe I can find is the really thin nylon used for the D-rings that the slings clip to. I didn't notice it at first, but it just looks lighter weight than everything else on the case.

Other than that I can only whine that the case did not make my opponents forfeit this past weekend, so I went home early. :(

As I had previously stated....have had my Wave case for well over a year now, and the nylon used to secure the D-rings to the case show absolutely no signs of wear or fatigue whatsoever...and the stitching is still nice and tight. So I would say that you have no worries there. :)

Thanks Lisa!

I LOVE the case. John's post about getting one in my colors made me go "DOH!" but I still like the brown Gator I have.

WHOLE lotta case for the $$

Nothing but good things to say about mine after a few weeks. Truly am amazing case for the price. Hell, it's an awesome case for just about any price. Sterling could be charging almost double for this case and I'd still think it would be worth it.
