Stinger Break/Jump Cue

Hello All,

Is anyone here familiar with the Stinger break/jump cue enough to provide an opinion/feedback on the quality of the cue? Has anyone compared it to a others such as Varney or Predator?

Thanks,

Randy

I went from the Stinger to the Varney.

The Stinger is a very good J/B cue. I did not care for the shaft taper on the Stinger at all. It jumps very good, and for me has a mediocre break.

If you do a search of my posts, you can find my Varney review.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

I just received my Jerico Thumper a week ago, and I love it! The difference in power was noticeable right away, but I initially had problems with control. After a week of working with it, however, I'm making 2-3 balls on the break with an alarming (for my opponents) consistency, and I'm starting to squat the cue ball pretty good.

I'm still scratching in the side a little, because it's just sinking in that I can really just concentrate on hitting that one ball absolutely square--the power will take care of itself. But there have been a lot of little 3-packs going around the last couple of days. With this break cue, things aren't looking good for the opposition when I really start getting familiar with this thing over the next few weeks!

As for the jump portion of the cue, it's just tremendous! I was putting some extra practice with it last night, and I'm still getting accustomed to the vastly reduced amount of power necessary to jump with this cue! Because you can actually jump at just about lag speed, it enables a whole different level of accuracy and control compared to the dedicated jump cue that I used previously.

The tip holds chalk well and it can apply all the english that you would want for a break. I don't do jump masse shots, so I can't advise you on those, but for all other uses, I recommend the Jerico jump/break cues highly. My previous b/j was an old McDermott EB-6, so it's probably an unfair comparison. From what I've read, you certainly can't go wrong with a Varney or Predator, either. In fact, from what I've been reading on this forum it pretty much seems that once players give a Varney a crack, they might never go back!

This is also my assessment of the cue. I don't know how to jump yet so I can't comment there, but the rest of VIP's review is spot on. Once a little control is established you get really nice results and a good spread.

VIP,

What are the specs on the Jerico and what does it cost? Haven't heard of that cue.

Thanks,

Randy

I have owned or used the sledgehammer, xbreaker, stinger, predator, cue tec, lightning bolt, varney and a few other cheaper j/b and in my opinion the varney out performs them all the longer jump cue jumps very easy and is very accurate and once you practice a little it breaks a ton hope that helps. The Jerico Stinger and Thumper are basically the same cue, but the Stinger is spliced differently (and very beautifully), costs more, and has a longer guarantee. My Thumper has a 13mm tip diameter with a conical tapered shaft, and to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure about the weight. I would guess it to be 18.75 oz. The cocobolo version that I got has a MSRP of $320, but I got it at www.hawleys.com for $260.

The Stinger is 18.7 oz. and 13.25 mm tip. I like the cocobolo model as I think it is a beautiful cue. But from what I've been reading about the Varney, I'm tempted to take that route too. I've been having trouble reaching Mr. Varney. Anyone know if his jump/break cues are readily available? Prices?

Thanks,

Randy

There's the accurate information!

The wait is usually not to long and the basic model is $375 I believe and a very easy guy to get along with he will treat you right.

I've let KV know you are looking for info.

I've got the cocobola stinger, and I get a lot of comments about how it looks. I am very satisfied with it so far, I just need to find a table where I wont' get kicked out for trying to learn to jump

Thanks Irish!

I found the pic of yours in one of your other posts and I really like it. If I go with the Varney, I may have him make one just like yours.

Thanks,

Randy

Possible Stinger for sale

I will probably have a Purpleheart Stinger for sale here in the next couple weeks. Just waiting to hear if my wife wants to keep hers or not. PM me if you are interested. Will be a good deal. :)

I had a bocote stinger and man it was so sweet. I unfortunately had to sell it because I needed the cash, and got just under $25 what I paid for it. The think jumps like a dream and for me, was a very strong break cue. Definitely give it and the thumper 2 thumbs up!

Also got a Jerry Powers (Jerico) dark rosewood sneaky pete for sale at the moment. If anyone's interested PM and I'll send pics.

Thanks to all for the replies! I decided to go with a Varney and will post a report when I receive it.

Thanks again,

Randy

I just got a Stinger a few weeks ago, and like it. However, I don't think there's much practical difference between it and other j/b cues I've owned or used. It has a fat, stiff shaft and a very hard tip (phenolic, I think), which are the basic requirements for both a breaker and a jumper.

One strange thing about the Stinger is that the handle is hollow (drilled out about 3/4 inch x 8-10 inches deep) - I suppose this is to move the balance point forward, don't really know. Problem is that I think it might make the jump part of the cue heavier, which is the wrong direction to go. I'd have preferred if the jump handle was hollow rather than the break handle, but then maybe the balance wouldn't have felt right for breaking.
