Stories of irate players

I wanted to start a thread discussing stories of irate pros or anyone really. So, I'll start out the session...

I remember about 10 years ago at the Akron Open when Earl was playing someone (can't remember whom) and as the match drew closer with Earl leading, Earl's temper got really upset.

Anyway, the crowd started rooting for the underdog and Earl basically screamed at the audience that they didn't respect him. At the end of the match, with Earl trailing, he got so upset that he threw himself out of the match.

We weren't sure if he was coming back but he did the next day...and still managed to win the tournament.

It was definitely an experience to behold.

I watched a good local player having a bad night and whacking his $1500 Hunter custom cue on the table after every miss. He just traded up to a $2500 Cognoscenti and he holds it like his baby. I heard he has had two Tad's also and did the same with them...it is only a matter of time for the Cog.

I've seen the same thing. Players trash their cues when they miss. Or they swear and curse when something doesn't go their way.

None of us are imune to getting upset but that's rather extreme.

Another guy I played against in college hung a 9ball in a hill hill game against me. He walked over shook my hand, turned around walked about 10 feet to his coat, put the coat on...then snapped his Meucci sneaky pete over his knee, threw it in the trash and walked out the door for a smoke. Came back feeling better...and out a cue. LOL.

Years ago at the US Open, Bobby Williams was playing Willie Munson. Bobby had a pretty solid lead and Willie started to forge a great comeback. While Willie was shooting, Bobby started to yell at a railbird that was woofing at him...the TD brought the rule book over and Bobby told him what he could do with it and his possible fine. Willie ended up beating Bobby, the best part of the story comes now.

Bobby went back to the room, grabbed his bags and checked out. I saw him at the front desk and asked him where he was going. He said he was gonna go to some NASCAR race <he was friends with Rusty Wallace, even played with a Mc Dermott with Rusty's car on it.> and left. He forgot he was sharing a room with someone <a old friend of mine which makes this story that much funnier to me>, when that guy went to the room his key no longer worked and his bags had been removed from the room. Poor guy had a helluva time getting a room from there...HAHAHAHAHA

Earl vrs. Kim Davenport

It was in the very early 90s in Lexington KY at the Lexington All Stars $20,000 added tournament.

This was the year Earl and Kim were in position for the Player of the Year award and were having some very exciting matches all year long.

Late rounds on the winners side and Earl and Kim were already 7 games into the match. Earl has been doing a lot of sitting, watching Kim run the last 7 racks. Break and Run, Break and Run... you could just barely hear Earl mumble his dislike of the situation. He was a little more quiet back then.. and the crowd was extremely appreciative of Kim's runouts. Kim made some really great shots and even Earl was taping the floor with the cue butt with acknowledgement.

Kim made a ball on the break of 8th game and was hooked on the one, Kim called "push" and Earl jumped out of his seat to scope the table.... now Earl had been sitting for about 35 minutes and just getting up to rack... so now that he's at the table he has to make a decision to either take a tough kick shot with very little chance of making the ball, but easily making a good hit. To everyone's amasment, Earl says "shoot again".

Kim makes a good hit and lucks in the 5 ball and Earl jumps up and yells "I can't believe the 5 ball went in!!!!"

Kim walks calmly over to the corner pocket and pulls the 5 out, shows it to Earl... and smugly says.. "Yep.. it went in" (crowd roars, Earl hangs his head and doesn't say a word the rest of the match) Kim wins 11-0

You should've see Earl at Mosconi this year...when he was interviewed, he refered to NVB breaking from the center of the table. In the interview he was clearly upset at this...why???

Dave

Why play when you're not going to enjoy yourself?
You will just be wastin time and money..............

He also said "he is twenty years younger than me, lets see if he can play as good as me when he is 42"! Then goes on about someone who doesn't even know how to play the game! And walks away from the interview. What a jerk off! There is no room for that in pool or any other sport!

I was playing at a tournament and playing this guy that I guesse thought he was a pro or something even though he's not. He missed alot of balls, miss the 9 and ended up scratching. Well normally that should be a lost since ball in hand who would miss a 9 right? Even a rookie wont miss that let alone me with a couple of years experience, i'm far from being a pro but come on common courtesy would be to give up that game on a $6!!!! tournament. I mean if it was at $25 to $100 entry then fine do what you wanna do but on a $6 tournament pls, you got too much pride in yourself. I made the nine but i ended up losing 5-3 whatever we both played bad. I didn't really wanna shake his hands after that but i did it anyways for the sake of the game.

crazy bruce

You havent seen irate unless you see Crazy Bruce play in the 70's. Ask Diliberto about him. Danny punched him out one day in the old Billiard Den in Hollywood. If Bruce was losing he would throw himself into a wall or smash his body into the ground. First his face turned red than blue. When a young player said to Bruce "hey cool it we're playing for money too" Bruce proceeded to take some money out of his pocket and shred them yelling some kind of obscenity. Then there was Brooklyn Butch who could fight and would fight at a drop of a hat. People cleared the room if he got into a game as he was very sensitive to any noise. He use to be a bouncer in a NY pool room and would disarm guys regularly. He was a real nice guy down deep and an artistic soul but he just was violent. Earl was nothing compared to these two guys.
Oh and about Earl and Kim Davenport. Earl has a tendency to pick on the weak. Women and foreigners from Third World countries who are not adept in the English language. He would never mess with the likes of Kim who had a pretty hot temper himself when he was crossed or he might mess with Steve Davis but I'm sure he wouldnt like to get into a tug with Oliver Ortmann.

Theres a player i know who is a descent money player but has a bit of a temper if he misses any shot or loses a game. I think they was playing 8 ball partners 20 per person and they lost a game, i watched him javelin his $300 cue towards the wall, one of the absolute funniest things i ever saw it went thru the dry wall an stuck into it like a dart lmao. He went over and pulled it out, i was back there the next week and they had patched the wall, the bar never said anything to him about it. Funny how in the exact same bar i had accidentally broken a glass when i broke an knocked the cue ball off the table, and i heard the waitress mutter that i should have to pay for the glass.
I was playing in a 8 ball tourney once in a new town where no one knew me, and i was playing this older guy, and i played a safety on him, from his reaction you'd think i just insulted the guys wife. Well he kept muttering about it while i was shooting, i had a easy shot, 2 feet from the pocket, str8 in and with the vnea rules u can call a safety shot, which i did just to piss him off more, this guy wouldn't shut up, and i ran out on him, and he still wouldn't shut up, i was just ready to invite the guy outside and beat him down, but somehow it didnt come to that, i bet he was really pissed after i won the tourney. Went back to the same tourney the next month, and i ended up playing the same guy again, and his buddies that he plays with had explained to him all about safety play, it's kinda sad because the guy plays league, i sat and talked to him for a lil bit and i tried to explain the idea of safety play to him, I was talking to a guy the other day that had played him 9 ball for money b4, and he said that guy didn't know what a push out shot was and they got into an argument over it, funny.
