Storing Pool Table in a Garage
DGHustles,
Storing furniture or cabinetry in a typical garage is risky. Although your garage is probably dry most of the time, there are a number of events that can cause it to get wet.
For starters, many water heaters are either in the garage, or in a closet in the garage area. Water heaters are notorious for developing leaks and dumping forty or fifty gallons of water on the floor. Occasionally, the leak is in the plumbing supply or discharge, and if so, will leak until the water supply is shut off (possibly thousands of gallons).
Most garages are not but a few inches higher than the elevation of the surrounding yard or driveway. During heavy rainfall, it is common for water to get high enough to enter the garage.
Lastly, your automobiles can be a source of various fluid leaks.
Certainly, do not store any part of your table directly on the floor, nor in a container placed directly on the floor, unless said container is completely water proof.
If you take the effort to wrap or cover your table securely, you may not ever unwrap it until the day you plan to install it. Thus, if it does get wet in the interim, you may not know it until after it is ruined.
A garage is meant to be used for storage. Even at that, though, wise precautions will pay big dividends.
Good luck in getting a pool table....it's a buyer's market, and there are some great bargains out there right now.
