Question: Is this how most, if not all, points are cut? If so, why are some cuemaker's points off or not even?

Thanks!

There are a number of reasons for the points to come out at different lengths. To start with the centers have to be exact both before and after the points have been glued in. All of the point V-cuts must be to the exact same depth for the points to be even. After the prong has been made and turned it must be attached to the handle, once again, dead nuts. If after attaching to the handle the the centers, both in the front of the forearm and to the rear of the handle must be true. If either is out or if the A-joint is not aligned perfectly, the cue will oscillate between centers causing one side of the cue to be closer to and so cutting deeper on one side over the other. Since these V channels are tapered, if one side is cut deeper than the other, then the side that was cut deepest will have both shorter and narrower points.

The points can be off for several reasons. If you do not hook the forearm to the handle correctly, you may get runout or play at the A joint causing the points to be cut more on one side than the other.
You may get this same thing after letting the cue sit for a time and making another pass on it at a later date. The wood may move, causing this same cutting problem.
All makers do things different. All do not cut their points this way.
Hope this helps a little.
Lee , your machine seems to cut and operate very nicely.
