OK, Ive had 7 tries to try and make 100 in a week as I thought might be possible. This is a summary of notable runs from each session:

DAY 1: 38,43,45
DAY 2: 44,48,65
DAY 3: 81
Day 4: 93
Day 5: 30ish - crap session
Day 6: 52
Day 7: 95! (Grrr)

On my last day I thought I would video the session to see if the added pressure would help me focus. Unbeleivably I broke down on 95, I will try and put it online soon. My average session time was probably around 2 hours, the first 3 sessions where in mega break in Pattaya, Thailand and the last 4 where in Rack n Roll, Manilla.

TheOne, I've got very mixed emotions here. I think it's great that you're playing so much straight pool. It's a magnificent, and rather addictive, game.

At all points, I've been wanting you to succeed and finally run that hundred. Though you didn't do it yet, two runs in the nineties remains impressive. Still, there's just a little piece of me that hopes your experience is increasing your assessment of the difficulty of a straight pool century. It really is something special to run a hundred, and when you get there, which could be very soon, you'll feel a great sense of accomplishment, but not one that I can fully relate to. By concidence, I have never run a hundred, but I've run in the nineties twice in my life.

I have to take my hat off to you for all your persistence in chasing this goal. It sounds to me like you're really enjoying the challenge, so keep having fun and let us all know when that century finally comes along.

All the best.

took the words right out of my mouth, SJM.. although I haven't hit the 90's yet, as I'm just picking up 14.1. Over the past two weeks, that has been my practice for an hour after work. The highest I have run so far is 38, so 90's is a bit off in the future. It's not that I can't make them, but the strategy is so different from what I'm used to.

Good luck to 100!

Eh, if you can run 90 you can run 100. I was putting so much pressure on myself to finally run 100 that I dogged it when I got there the first time. Actually, I had run something like 114 before I realized that I had run 100, then I promptly dogged it at 119. Since then I've run over 100 a few times, with my new high run being 138 (two better than my last "high run"). The funny thing is, not many people play straight pool anymore, so I don't have an opportunity to see just how bad my patterns really are by watching someone who plays it well. I think I might run a lot more if I had a clue as to what the hell I was doing. :D

My high run in straight pool is, this is just a guess because it's been so long, 39. My high run in 9-ball is 7 racks on a big table, which is 63 balls, w/o combinations or 9's on the break. So, what the heck am I doing in this thread? :D

Funny, sounds just like me!! :D

although I've only run 4 racks in a row with no combos.

Thanks guys...

some nice words and its been fun. SJM I have thought about what you said and what I said before and I really do agree. At the end of the day I am trying to be humble, I don't want to make a hundred sound like something special because I guess I'm comparing myself to the Pro's and I think it is nothing compared 250+ However I see where your coming from and I shouldn't belittle the acheivment either for all the guys out there that have been trying to make a ton for some time. If it helps I guess even though I am still learning 9 ball I have had a cue in my hand since I was 9 which is 22 years and I guess a 100 is something to be proud of. However I still have no idea how to bank on a 9 ball table and I have a stack to learn in 9 ball. But I have got by in 14:1 purely on potting and cue ball control which if honest is easier on a 9 ball table than on a snooker table.

Also just because I have made some decent runs it DOES NOT mean that I am doing it the right way. I was lucky enough to record my 95 high run and I will try and post it online tomorrow for any (good and bad) comments.

Cheers again (PS jimmy Rude Dog sure loves pulling your tits lol)

From what I have seen so far gremlin there's a lot of 2 ball and 1 pocket going on if you know what I mean :-))

Well, at most, you ran 56 since you would have had to pocket at least one ball on the break each game, but who's counting? :D

7 racks on the big table is also my new high run (I've run more on the bar table, but I don't even count that). I did it this weekend in San Diego, also w/o combinations or 9's on the break. Damn, I feel like James Brown. Jump back! I wanna kiss myself!

Hah! Whatever.

I'm sick and I'm on every cold medication I can find. That's my excuse for my current state of delirium, so F off, lewd dog! :D

You've got issues Jimmy, serious issues! :D Oh, and you had to point that out that it was only 56 balls, huh? And uh, the issues thing, of course, that's JMHO. ;)

I would like to just be able to run a rack :p . There's no way I will ever be able to run 100. Wishful thinking for me

High runs ...

I have broke 100 probably 7 or 8 times, but haven't played straight pool in a long time (one of my favorite games though), but I am most proud of my 77 ball run back in 69 in San Diego in an exhibition match against Willie Mosconi, who was my idol at the time.

Don't get down on yourself Craig those are some pretty damn good runs, how are things in Manila? Getting any action in?

Those runs are all great, you should be happy with your play. You'll be over a hundred soon I assure you. I would like to make a comment though. After practicing 14-1 for some months I would hit runs similar to yours. I decided I needed a goal. I didn't want to make it out of reason so here is what I did.

I'd set up a break shot and my goal every night I went to the pool room was run 50. I wanted to do it within three tries. I hit that goal ever time I practiced. One night was a real struggle but I was so determined, I believe it took 4 maybe 5 times.(I'll never forget that night) It got to be old hat per-say, I'd just set up a break ball and usually run 50 the first try. Then bump it to 60, and my last was 75. 75 was difficult to do every time but I did reasonably well. Like you my practice session was about two hours then I wanted to play someone.

I just thought if you picked a smaller (but more consistant goal) it might help. You need to reach that goal every time you play. There is nothing to say you can't go past the 50 if you want. Sometimes I did, sometimes I just packed it in at 50 or 75 and played someone. Just a thought. Good Luck your doing great.

Rod, you're making me think of the 1978 World Open 14.1 Championships at the Biltmore Hotel in NYC. I was watching Ray Martin practicing a few hours before the final, in fact my friend Matt and I were the only two spectators, for the tournament venue wasn't even open to the public yet. We had sneakily wandered in under the radar. Martin set up his favorite break shot and started running some balls. 42, 56,70, where would it end? Yowser, he's up to 98, and he has a perfect break shot. I don't believe it! He's unscrewing. He has finished his practice. It was hard to fathom that somebody would walk out on a 98 ball run, but I guess 100 meant nothng to Ray. A few hours later, Ray won his third world straight pool championship by beating Allen Hopkins.

SJM, While I'd never compare my game to Ray I had a fairly simple outlook. If you can run 50 you can run a hundred. Later on, even 75 wasn't a hard goal to reach but I didn't see the need to go farther. I mean I could practice all day but it doesn't mean much unless you do it in competition. Even if you put together three short runs to a 100 or 125 in competition you'll beat most 14-1 players.

I'm not saying I have a ton of century runs because I don't. I'd have to say, I would be inclined at 98 to run a few more though. LOL

Your thoughts on watching Ray reminds me of playing Joe Balsis in an exibition. I showed up on time but a little later than I liked. I asked for a few minutes to warm up and Joe said go ahead take all the time you want. I set up a break shot and quit my run at 50. Early in the match he left himself bad so he kicked at a ball near the corner. I seriously doubt he would have done that playing another champion. LOL I stepped up and run 60 something, 66 I think, got a terrible kiss and scratched. He proceded to run 119 and out! Joe of course is one of my all time favorites.
