Straight Pool 100 - I failed!

Straight Pool Video

Blackjack already mentions several great players to try and watch. Let me add one specific video I really enjoy. Accu-stats has a video with Grady Mathews playing Dallas West. In the video, Dallas breaks, Grady steps up and runs 48, Dallas runs a few, plays safe, then Grady runs 102 and out. Both of Grady's runs appear effortless. Certainly a lot any aspiring straight pool plaer can learn a lot from.

Posting video

The One,

As an aspiring Straight Pool player on the verge of getting into the 50s, I'm learning a great deal from this thread. As I mentioned on another thread, I ran 47 the other night which was my high run. I've run at least a dozen 30s in the last six months so I believe the 47 is a fair reflection of my ability. I also missed a simple shot right after someone came over to talk to me. I only get the chance to have a 3hr session every 2-3 weeks or so, but the fact I've got in the 40s the last two times proves it's no fluke; mid 40s is where the peak of my game is right now.

Anyway, I have the 47 on tape. I converted it to an MPEG file. How do I post it to my site so it streams? Do I need special software?

The One,

As mentioned earlier, Dallas West is terrific to watch. However, in the tape that was mentioned were he plays Grady, you don't get to watch him play. I have an accustates tape where he runs out in two innings (I think) against Zuglan. I own about 10 straightpool tapes with Varner, strickland, archer, reyes, crane, balsis, Lane, etc... but Dallas impresses me with (as Johnny Ervalino says) "old style straight pool". This technique illustrates simplicity at its best. Gently moving apart the packs and then picking the balls off. He makes the game look so easy that it is mesmorizing. The cue ball has very little movement and the position play is precise. It is poetry in motion.

Your video reminded me of Stricklands play in straight pool, very hard hitting aggressive nine-ball approach. As you mature in the game, you will use more touch and you're short game will improve. By not going into clusters with so much speed, the balls will not go up table as much. Balls will still be knocked loose, which will allow you to open up any remaining clusters. You will also be able to control the cue ball better.

others to watch....Rempe and Varner. Rempe has some straight pool video lessons that are supposedly very good.

Good luck in your endeavor.

Regards,

Doug

Yes, the Rempe wideos are superb. A straight pool guru not yet given his due in this thread is Allen Hopkins. One can learn a lot from watching tapes of Allen playing straight pool.

Hi Hoboken, yes you do need flash professional, with this software you can convert your video file (mpeg) into a flash video file (.flv) Then you can use use one of the video player components that comes free with flash to display it on your site. There may be other ways to display your video but for streaming I like this way very much. The file size of my 95 run was over 50mb which is very large for a website and streaming is the only way to go (unless I made it so small you couldn't see anything).

PS
I assume your from Hoboken, opposite manhattan? I have some fond memories of partying there in the mid 90's when I was living in NYC. :-)

just watched your video while putting off doing some uni work. I can tell you're from a snooker background, you fizz the ball all over the table. I find i do the same thing, having only transferred from snooker to pool about a year ago its still great fun to fizz the ball all over the place!

The One, get rid of this thread, I want to see a new thread from you "I ran the friggin' 100 eventually !!"

Now you've made me reply and move it up again LOL!

I wil I will, I just got a few women troubles etc at the moment which is messing with my head (steady jimmy!). I had a go tonight, much more control but couldn't concentrate and had a high of about 57 and missed an easy ball. The next long session I have I'll smash it for sure :-)

I just enetered a big 8 ball comp in Bangkok today. Its all weekend, group stage followed by ko and should have some top players in it, including the thai' pro's that play on the san miguel hopefully. SO will see how I do, may get chance to put some 14:1 practice in, maybe not?

Thanks for the encouragement

Yep, Hoboken is a great place to party. It's changed A LOT in recent years. Now it's very much a 'yuppie' town which is great for someone like me, but the old-time residents are not so happy about it. There are a load of other Brits in town, come to Mulligans for 7am Irish Breakfast, beer and live Premier League football next time you're down this way! Then we'll take you up to Willow Billiards so you can run that 100!

I've got Flash Pro and the Encoding software but I'm damned if I can find the Video Encoding Screens to create the FLV. Can you please help me out?

How did you get on in the Bangkok 8-ball tourney?

Hi Hob, try this link it has an excellent walk through on encoding the video and putting it on your site.

The bangkok tournament was good, with some excellent players including the Thai number 1 chachawan who plays on the San miguel tour and some professional snooker players. I played well the first day winning my group after 5-0,5-1,5-1 and 5-0 wins. This resulted in me being seeded number 1 and I got a great draw in the last 16. Unfortunately I made the terrible mistake of underestimating my opponent and thinking I had an easy run to the final - I lost my first match and went out in the last 16! A painful day really and a valubale lesson. My friend won it in the end beating all the top Thai players quite comfortably.
