In this situation the red dot cue ball is definitely in balk. The object ball is definitely in balk. If the red dot cue ball is shot and takes the place of the plain cue ball, the red dot cue ball is not in balk but contacts the object ball in balk. THIS SHOT IS LEGAL.



Of course, this may not be the Old Timers rules they use down at Blackies Pool, Poker, and Pizza.

Yes, under WPA rules, this shot is legal. Under BCAPL rules, it's not. Historically, it's not. In fact, more often than not, you will get into an argument prior to taking this shot. I understand the logic behind why the rule came into existence but I think creates more problems than it solves.

Jude, thanks for the clarification. I'm not a league player and didn't know that BCAPL sponsored 14.1 If a BCAPL 14.1 league was formed locally, I'd be the first to join. It's a great game but seldom played here.

By the way, if I called the kitchen "the balk", the players here would laugh me out of the place. LOL

There was once an argument at the World Championships of 14.1 over a rule I thought was universal. It turns out, many Europeans treat the racking area differently than Americans do. As we move to try and standardize pool globally, I think it's important to at least be respectful of the differing opinions out there.

Regarding the BCA, I don't believe they currently sponsor any 14.1 events but I could be wrong (wouldn't be a first). I'm only referring to their rulebook.

Regarding "the balk", I've never heard the kitchen referred to as such but it wouldn't be a first. I enjoy the many terms different people use to describe pool and the other billiard games. There are a lot of British ex-Patriots where I play and if I hang with them enough, I start talking about "potting balls".

I thought that for a behind the line shot, the object ball had to be in front of the line also, not just where it was contacted? Meaning the base of the cueball is on or behind the line and the object ball base is on or in front of the line.
