Two questions
1, If you run the rack and miss the break ball. How many balls do you count? I say 14 but some at our pool room say you have to count 15 to keep the rack count straight.

2, When you scratch after making a ball, Do you spot the ball that you scratched on. We play this way but a guy was telling us that you don't spot it, you just take it off the back score to keep the count right.

I tried looking it up but just want to make sure I understand it right. Thanks in advance

1) 14 on 1st rack, lose a point in 2nd rack for whiffing the break ball.

2) spot the ball made off a scratch, lose a point. Opponent in kitchen. I've seen so many balls spotted in 14.1 the line dang near hit the foot rail.

Maybe Bob J or Marop or ? will chime in.

You made 14--that's what you post--on the scratch--we always played that you spotted the bal up--I can't remember what is in the rulebook--but again it's been 30 years since I saw one--so I would say that rule should be looked up--Google may have a place that could answer the question

14...you made 14, so you score 14.

Do not spot.

This is half-right.

Yes, the score is 14. However, If you pocket a ball and scratch on the same shot, you spot the ball AND lose a point off your TOTAL score.

What you should be doing is keeping two scores: a rack score and a total score. The rack score is the number of balls you've pocketed during a rack. An easy way to keep it straight is that your rack score PLUS your opponents rack score PLUS whatever is left on the table will always equal 15.

At the end of the rack, add your rack score to your total score and reset the rack score to zero.

At the end of the rack, there are 14 balls pocketed and one left on the table. In your example, after missing the break ball there are zero balls pocketed and 15 on the table.
