STRAIGHT POOL Strategy and “Run Your Age” Challenge

I've put 2 videos in this thread. Valley with shimmed pockets. All we play on it is straight pool, probably 12+ hours/week, maybe more. Literally thousands of hours.

Crowding on it is worse than on a 9 foot, but shotmaking is easier. I keep detailed records (made easy by the app we use) and my averages are pretty identical playing on the 7' valley, or on a 9' brunswick.
Thank you for sharing that. I haven't played a lot of straight pool on either table size, but I would also suspect I would do equally well (or poor); although, this might not be true for all people.

My top run ever is 46 balls, run when I was about 20-22.
My recent top run is 36 made when I was (and still am) 67.

There is little hope I can ever run my age.....
You only need 33 in the "Run 100 Minus Your Age" division. Post a video when you get a chance.

Regards,
Dave

very impressive. Perhaps I'll try full rack on the bar table later next week.

As I mentioned earlier, my table is far from ideal for high runs. Aside from the congestion, the pockets are very small- I wanted a 9 footer but couldn't fit it so I asked the mechanics to make the table as tough as possible. Also, my ability level isn't on your level either. The hardest part seems to be leaving the key breakout ball.

I had a Hopkins challenge (main rules are running the first 10 in any order and then the final 5 in order- counting for 2 points) going with a friend of mine during lockdown and was able to get 20s on a few occasions.

What is the app?
Is it an app for specifically scoring a straight pool game, or something to just keep track of the run totals?

When I started playing, I played a bit of straight pool on some Gold Crowns with the counters. The few times I've played without the counters, it was more difficult the keep track of things correctly. I'm sure with more discipline it could be done better with pen and paper, but it would be nice if there was an easier way that was already built.

Hmm... So my problem all these years has been playing on my bar table in my basement? ;)
:ROFLMAO:Haha- that is the least of my problems. I probably couldn't run more than 20 balls on any table unless the pockets were huge. Just pointing out that it may be more challenging on a 7 footer with small pockets

I am very happy to announce that I ran my age yesterday. Here's my video:

Check it out. Who's next?
Dave, thanks for this. So....for the purposes of this challenge I can try and beat my 25 on a 3.5 x 7? I guess I just didn't conceive of straight pool on a bar table, but... cool! I'll probably stick to the 9 ft, though. I have run more than my current age on the 9 ft years ago when I played every day. Now, playing once or twice a week, is not commensurate to achieving good runs in straight pool. I'm destined to fumble...but I'm not giving up. I'm thinking I'll get lucky when I go to play again next Saturday. Anyhow, this is a fun challenge! Thanks for documenting it.

Go for it. Any table size is fine. Shots are much easier on a smaller table (assuming the pockets aren't ridiculously tight) but there is more clustering and "traffic." I think the difference is probably a "wash" for most people (i.e., size doesn't really matter).

Good luck,
Dave
