Straight Poolplayers Needed

Why is it so hard to get a straight pool league going? All I ever hear is- oh I love straight pool, or how high everyone's runs are and yet nobody will stick their neck out and give it a go. I'm an aspiring player that would love to benefit from the lessons that can be learned in straight pool, but it doesn't look like it will happen......Unless I want to part with my paycheck of course!

I have to agree with alot of what you have said. I feel that part of the problem is that in the old school way of thinking (and i hear it all the time) around here is that unless you are gambling, why come to the pool room? Fortunately for the people here the room owners do not allow the regulars to hit up on newbies or someone new to the pool room. The action players (very few) that come thru know how to get a game here. But there are alot of jerks here that would gladly go up to some new comer and play them for a few bucks a game and after the newbies lose only $20.00 or $30.00 and such tell the room owner that they were hustled and will never come back. hence the no ask rule..........................mike

Pocketwolf,

I suggest that you ask this same question in the straight pool section of this forum. We have some good players that run their own straight pool leagues and I am sure they can give you a lot of great ideas on how to make your league successful. Also, if you haven't already, visit

good luck!

Amsterdam Billiards has run a very successful Straight Pool league for many years. Handicapping can be tricky but is necessary to get all levels of participants, key in the success of any league. I would suggest contacting Chris Lynch or Rolando to see if they could email you the set up for theirs.
Find a slow night at an interested pool room and see if they might be willing to put up a nice cue or two and then do some promotion in all the other leagues. Maybe a cool flyer with a pic of Jackie Gleason. Emphasize that all levels are welcome and make sure the handicapping is fair...
Low rated players get discouraged if the same couple of people always win...

Another idea, maybe try a handicapped tournament first...to see if there is enough interest?

I really miss straight pool, I participated in two leagues in NYC, and played people like Tony Robles, Danny Barouty, Gerda and SJM! A better education I can not imagine. I once played (or should I say racked for) Tony while he ran close to 200 balls! I really miss it, there is nothing quite like Straight pool!

Thanks for the input, maybe we can get something put together soon. The hard part-unfortunately-is convincing a room owner that it's a good idea. I live in lincoln,ne and there aren't a lot of rooms to choose from. Aside from that, the governing body for our local leagues has a pretty good chokehold on available times and tables. Maybe it's time to move to KC. Thanks again...

First off thank you Blackjack for your plug and support of 14and1.com.

Pocketwolf, there are very few room owners that will turn down business. Don't worry about that. One good part about straight pool leagues is that it can fit into almost any room schedule. The league will only use about 2 hours and will not tie up tables longer than that, if you had 8 league players match up using 4 tables, say starting the league at 6:30, its over at 8:30 at the latest. Ask your local room if there is a night that 4 or 5 tables are slow during that period. I am confident you can get a league going.

Cue ball do you play at the Golden Cue? If so does Rocky still run it and is his father still alive.

Whenever you feel like making the 3 hour drive down here let me know. Our playoffs are getting ready to start and there will be some very close matches throughout the playoffs.

My first match in the playoffs is against Danny Harriman. To give you a little understanding how the league works, I will have to get to 40 points before Danny gets to 120 (I am practicing hard to put a 40 and out on him :D).

We meet on monday nights starting around 7pm.

To clarify for Markus, none of these are gay leagues. :p

Oops. When I read this I was thinking:
Straight poolplayers are different from players of straight pool.

I know there are straight pool leagues, as well as non-straight pool leagues. One or both may be desirable depending on your preference.

Having the right equipment for keeping score was a major obstacle.

I think this thread is in reaction to the one about gay poolplayers.

What a shock someone could turn the title into a funny. ha ha Thank you for pointing out my incapacity to phrase my thoughts correctly. I better call my parents and tell them they failed miserably in my formative educational years. What i was looking for was advice on starting a pool league for 14.1 players. Your personal insecurities are neither my concern nor my problem. Good luck with them and have a nice day.
