Stroketrainer Review

Thanks Gremlin. I am not angry at Fast's non reply. It's pretty hard to get me angry. "Harmony", I don't see much of that in his posts, that is why I usually don't respond, except in PM's to Larry. Just to try and keep some peace and harmony on this forum. I first met you at the US Open. I hope to see you again. Maybe this weekend at Orange Ball Cafe if you are going to be there. I am trying to get a few local AZ members together and play some time. I have six of us lined up now. Maybe you would like to play. Three of them are women. Just a fun, social thing.

Dear Don, I would like to have you as a friend, there fore I would not do any thing to displease you. Sorry if I poked fun, you read much more into that than was there, simple poke fun.

As for my non reply to explain my Wa, I have been out doing shows and running the pool school, now very busy, will have less time for board.
Here is your reply.

IN MY FORMER LIFE AS SAMURAI, WHEN YOU MESS WITH MY WA AND PISS ME OFF, I PULL OUT SWORD AND CHOP HEAD OFF. NOW WHEN YOU PISS ME OFF ON BOARD AND MESS WITH MY WA, I CAN ONLY CALL YOU BOZO, THIS NOT NEAR AS FUN AS CHOPPING HEADS OFF. I WISH I WAS BACK IN 1600, THINGS WERE SIMPLE THEN.

You also say none of my posts contain harmony, not so, this one does.

WA-KEI-SEI-JAKU: It is said that this word shows the basic idea of chado. "Wa" means harmony. "Kei" means respect. "Sei" means purity. "Jaku" means tranquillity. We can finally reach "jaku" through "wa", "kei" , and "sei."

Harmony
The entire Japanese culture seems to be centered around the concept of wa or harmony. The Japanese nation is one that is densely populated and unless some social system evolved that allowed people in close contact to get along there probably would not even be a Japan today.
Some type of society-wide standards have to exist for a densely-populated group to avoid destroyed itself. Those standards, of course, may be very complex and totally alien to Western modes of thinking but the important thing is that they work.
In ancient Japan samurai could kill a peasant for any supposed slight whatever, so the peasants learned to present an outward appearance that would be acceptable to the samurai and their lords while keeping their true feelings hidden. Personal survival depended on their developing this skill.
This in-grained pattern continues today and it is easy for a Westerner to misinterpret what a Japanese person actually believes by just observing their outer appearance.

I've been thinking about purchasing one for quite a while. Of course a product is not gonna turn you into Efren overnight. To play pool good requires not only solid mechanics but a sound state of mind and ability to control your emotions. Once the stroke and mechanics become grooved, the rest is all mental, and that is by far the toughest part of the game to master, IMO.

I'm using one now. I've got a mirror set up so I can watch for my elbow dropping, which I am trying to eliminate, It seems to be a good tool, but I'll know better if and whaen my stroke gets better and I can see the results.
Dennis
p.s. I think this thread got hijacked. Maybe we should have separate threads about "wa", japanese culture and the like, so that when someone clicks on the subject of Stroke trainer, he could actually expect the posts to be about Stroketrainer. ;)

There is nothing wrong with dropping your elbow. All the pros do it. Whoever said you shouldn't drop your elbow is nuts.

As long as you keep the cue level. Dropping your shoulder or your elbow will make the tip come up and sometimes results in a miscue. Especially on power shots. YMMV

I wonder if bustamante can use this gadget lol....with his stroke i don't think so...smooth but yet wobbly if there is such a thing.

Shoulder drop

Hey now, just a minute. If you only use your elbow and do not drop your shoulder, the cue will move up and down because you are creating a pendulium effect. To demonstrate, take a paper towel roll, ( the cardboard tube ) and slide it over the butt section of your cue. Get in your shooting position with your stance, grip, and bridge as if you are going to shoot. Tighten your bridge so the shaft wont move. Slide the tube back and forth like you are stroking the cueball. Watch the cue tip. Up and down. Now, if the tip actually makes contact with the cueball more than once on a shot, where is it when you make the final contact? ;)
Nice training aid folks. I sell em in differant colors too.

Lemme play the devil's advocate here.
$300 gets you a private lesson or two, videotaped by Don P.
Don's been playing since Moses was a kid. :D
He'll make you a custom made paper roll stroke truer or some other gizmo.
If you're lucky, Don might even teach you the slip stroke. :p
Which is the better value?

I've had three videotaped lessons with Scott Lee. I still think the stroketrainer is good for something. I know it was a little expensive. I can use it and a mirror and see if I'm doing my stroke the way Scott instructed me. We shall see. Dennis

Hey Dennis

I am not knocking the stroke trainer.
For your info, I haven't charged for a lesson in three years, I give lessons weekly. I also have a BreakRAK that I lend out free of charge.
I sell custom cues at 20% to 40% off retail. I purchase broken custom cues and repair and sell at a fraction of their origional cost. I have even gone so far as to send an AZ member a $2,200 custom cue on a pay when and if you can basis. That was three months ago, notta pal. He keeps talking about it hanging over his head. I keep reminding him that it was a " when and if deal and don't worry about it".
I am very gainfully employed and love and support the game whenever possible. It is my pleasure to do so.
I am a BCA Certified Instructor and have been trained in cue repair by Leonard Bludworth and Chris Hightower. Now let me run this down for ya, Instructor training ( $2,500 ) repair training ( $1,500 ) lathe for repair
( $1,875 ) misc supplies for repair ( $2,000 ) BreakRak ( $200 ) misc. custom cues for sale ( $12,000 ) my return on total investment ( $5,000 ). As you can see my friend, I ain't in it for the money. I put cues in the hands of players that they probably never could afford. I teach players about proper mechanics, throw, deflection, inside english, outside english, banking, everything I know about the game. This takes a lot of my spare time, but I love it. My payoff, good friends and a wonderful life. You see my friend, the more you give away, the more you get. Cause and effect.
I hope this gives you a better understanding of where I am comming from.
May you always have good rolls my friend.

Now, tell me what you do for the pool community as a whole.
Sincerely, Don ( no can play )Purdy

It sure sounds like you know a lot and do a lot of good things for pool. And it sounds like you are happy doing it.

Did I give you the impression that I was in any way denigrating you or anything you do? If I did, I am sorry that you got that impression. I was merely responding to a post that seemed to imply that I should have got a lesson from you rather than bought a stroketrainer. A lesson with you sounds like it would be a good experience, but I was just mentioning to the poster that I had not bought the Stroketrainer rather than buy a lesoon, that I had done both. no offence to you itended.

Why is it that you want to know what I have done for the pool comunity? I just started playing again less than a year ago. I've bought things, read things, played in leagues. I enjoy playing pool and have gone to a couple of tournaments and spectated.

Anyway, good shooting to you. Dennis

We need more Purdy's in pool

DON, THIS IS FAST, IF EVERYONE IN POOL WAS AS UN SELFISH AND PURE OF HEART AS YOU ARE WOULD NOT THIS BE A WONDERFUL WORLD, SADLY, YOU MAY BE THE ONLY ONE, I PROBABLY WONT RUN INTO ANOTHER ONE LIKE YOU UNTIL I REACH HEAVEN AND ENTER THE POOL HALL IN THE SKY. THE SAD PART ABOUT POOL TODAY IS EVERYONE IS ONLY OUT FOR THEM SELVES, THE FIRST THING I HEAR FROM MOST PEOPLE IS WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME. Everyone is screwing somebody else, it's all one giant circle F***. Please excuse my Fron say.

I am leaving for a week to go on top of old Mt Airy and just sit there and contemplate a few things. I need some time away to sort some stuff out, had a reversal of sorts just hit me. Won't be answering any thing on here for a short while, check back in when I come down off the mountain.
Auf Wiedersehen :D

And just what makes you think that attitude is restricted to TODAY and POOL?

Absolutely, why can't we flake off a little of center and talk about my wa or ba, my ta or da, why is that such a big deal? Are we in a reform school here or what, lighten up people. It gives me nightmares of being in Catholic school, don't beat my wrist with that rular, I won't stray from the subject ever again. I am a flake, let me flake off.
I got my stroketrainer in and put it to work. When I saw it I went no way, this thing can't be for real. I just kissed off 2 C notes for sure.

I have for a long time taught to stroke down a line on the table rail. This thing began to groove my stroke at once, nail it on line. One day into this thing I am in love, this is a winner. A little pricy at 200 bucks, but ask your self this question, would you pay $200 for a perfect grooved stroke like Buddy Hall. The answer is you would pay $2000, $20,000 if you had the money and that was the price. Without a grooved stroke, you have nothing. I am sold, I endorse it, I am now using it in the Power Source Pool School, when I tour the NE this late March, come out and use it with me.

I was not surprised to also find out Buddy Hall and Ralph Souquet are also using it. Add Fast Larry to that list. I almost passed this one up. This one is a real sleeper, go for it people.
