stun forward and stun back shots

2 vs 3

I don't see the difference in #3...?

Number 2 starts with a slightly below center stun and times out to begin slight forward roll just before impact.

Number 3 starts with max draw, times out to stun then to slight forward roll just before impact.

Number 2 is hit harder to carry the sliding cue ball almost to the target.

Number 3 can be hit softer because the backspin has to wear off then become sliding then small forward roll.

I hadn't really considered number 3 originally but if you saw these as draw shots and you always used max draw this would be the approach.

Spin vs punch

Oh, one other thing that's a big factor in how a player shoots a shot --- and that's their playing style. Some players prefer to punch the ball more and other players prefer to spin the ball more.

Yes. On the very small forward and back moves of an inch or two it is more like a slight bounce or lack of it, vs a crisp stop shot.

Even if you begin with max spin it has to wear off to almost nothing to keep from coming back too far and must wear off completely and then the slide has to wear off to get to the beginning of forward roll for the slight move forward.

I think a person who always uses max draw is investing their time wisely because they develop a perfect instinct for these changes in roll by being consistent in how they shoot. I am with you on this up to about 1/2 diamond, then I guess I am just a puncher. ;)

... So far I am most consistent with #1 working off the stun shot and varying the speed a little but I am open to input.
Consider a slightly different situation. The object ball is on the center spot (the exact middle of the table, usually not marked). The cue ball is half way to a side pocket and a little off straight. How many different spots can you take the cue ball to from there without a cushion and not cheating the pocket? If you can't cover nearly half the table, you need to work on this shot.

This is like the Wagonwheel drill, but without freedom in placement of the cue ball.
