I've heard it said that the only way to put a tip on is with a lathe. I don't understand what use a lathe would have in putting a tip on, minus trimming it. What is the process with a lathe? Just curious, thanks.

you don't really *need* a lathe, you can do a decent job by hand with some practice. but the lathe is a lot faster and easier and it does a perfect job

process with a lathe:
cut off old tip
perfectly face off ferrule
glue on new tip
trim sides flush with ferrule
shape tip
burnish sides of tip

You will need a lathe for layered tips. Snipers are just about impossible to put on without one. The layers will separate as you try to trim the excess tip. You really need to cut the excess while spinning. For LePro, elk master, etc, you can do it by hand just fine - as long as your are careful.

And even though you can put a screw in the wall with a hammer, doesn't mean you should. Using the right tool for the job is typically the best way to go.

Ive done a tip by myself and I've have one done by a cuemaker. The difference was way more than obvious. I've retired for retipping my cues, and im going to blame it on the fact that I haven't a lathe and use layered tips. Yeah that sounds good. Thanks
