Do I use 1/4" on all pockets or 1/4" on corners and 1/8" on the sides? 1/4" on the sides seems like it would make them too small.

Depends on what you're trying to hit as an end result, as well as what were the pocket opening to begin with, what angles were they as well? In fact, what kind of table? How thick are the facings being replaced, and how thick are the ones you're putting back on?

thanks, Glenn

for responding. We did a GCI a few years ago, but the side pockets seem too small. This is a GCIII that has not had the rails worked on. Corners are about 140 deg and 12deg top to bottom. I think the sides are about 112deg. The table will probably be used mostly for 1p and it is now double shimmed w/ the black canvas backed facings. I prefer the red facings and will probably use those. I have new super speed rails for it. BTW, I had the rail extensions for the GCI done at a wood shop and they aligned the grain with the grain in the rail and the extensions are deteriorating a little(covered 3 times since extending the rails). I heard somewhere that poplar is a good wood to use?? Is it ok to place grain of the shims across the grain of the rails. It seems like it would be more durable.

Plywood is much better for extending the rails than solid wood. No way the factory corner pockets have 140 degree miters, more like 143 or 144. Solid wood extentions split and crack, plywood don't.

Glen

PS. Part of extending the rails is also to correct the factory pocket miters, as they're not the same on both sides of the pockets most of the time when dealing with the Gold Crowns, don't matter which model.

thanks again

but the original ? is if I should use thinner shims on the sides than the corners. I am not at the poolhall right now, but I am sure you are correct on the factory angles(143/144).

Equal shims, will give you equal reduction in the side and corner pockets, yes, and equal shims will also keep the side pocket about 1/2" wider than the corner pockets.
