Successful experiment

It's completely individual.

My Tascarella was an awesome, awesome cue, but I just could not get used to the weight at 19.2 ounces.

Switched to my Dan Janes custom, and at 17.9 oz everything is smoother and easier, my stroke is better and I have no inclination to try and muscle the ball.

For me a cue around 18oz has way more finesse, and is just better in ever way.

Balance matters, though. The lighter a cue feels in my back hand the better, so I prefer light forward balanced cues.

Lucky for me Pete Sr. is building me an 18oz cue. It will be awesome.

I've been playing for 2+ years now and I started with a 20oz cue. After about 6 months I had an almost physical need for a heavier and longer cue so I started playing with an 8" extension all the time and the cue was about 23oz. My play jumped up pretty dramatically overnight and for the next year and then slowly the cue started feeling bulky and slow so I took the extension off and now play at 19oz and my play has jumped up another level. Pool is so dependent on personal mechanics and whatnot so I think it's good to be open to change.
