Hi...i have a plan to ask Eric build me a fancy plainjane cue..so here i want asking a favour ...
1. i don't really know what design i'm gonna ask him to build, can you all give me help to put a nice pix of his ring work.

2. what wood combo that you really like from Eric...for playability

3. what kind of joint pin (Size and Material) that you like from Sugartree. (actually i already got one PJ cue from Eric..it's a Bubinga forearm PJ with 3x8 x 11 joint pin..i really like it alot..that is the reason i want him to build me one more of his cue)

4. what weight best of his cue

5. Last, waht kind of tip do you use for your sugartree...(Moori, Kamui or else)


Don't get me wrong..i can ask this question to Eric....But, i really need to know what his fans thought about his cue..

Just Send Eric the money, and sit back and let him do it his way, in his time frame, BTW there are several SugarTrees For Sale Now in the Wanted for Sale Section.
 
I would ask for scallops in the butt sleeve and either Westinghouse Micarta or natural phenolic joint depending on the wood.

The wood is the most important decision and as Coco said, leave that up to Eric. That way you will get the best wood he has. I like spalted maple though.

Scallops in the joint end of the shaft would be cool.

The last I knew, Eric is not taking orders so he can catch up on his existing list. My suggestion is to not get too excited because he may refuse it for the time being.

1. Once you hear back from Eric with an acceptance I will more than gladly send or post up any kind of ringwork you want. I have owned 10 in the last 3 years and have pretty good pictures of all of them.

2. Eric cores all of cues so my suggestion is to pick something he already has in the works to speed up the process.

3. Eric uses 3/8 x 10 only.

4. I would suggest a weight of 19-19-1/4 ounces. This is what Eric plays with and I have fallen in love with this weight and balance. I have owned several of his personal players and all have been stellar. Just ask him to build it as if he was going to play with it.

5. Eric uses a proprietary tip called a Sugartip. The are hard and play fantastic.


Your English is just fine. There are people on here from the U.S. and are very difficult to read.

I agree with everything stated earlier here. But the one thing i would change is the tip. And that is of course subjective. I only use a Kamui Black SS on my Sugartree. I felt that the Sugartip was way too hard of a hit for me. For me a Sugartree+Kamui Black SS=Heaven:thumbup:

I agree with this except will point out that whichever weight you get, Eric will very clearly balance the cue perfectly. I've owned a couple lighter cues of his and they balance and feel great. I once added a .1oz (yes, one tenth of an ounce) weight bolt to the end of one just as an experiment and it felt awful; the balance had been so perfect that any change just messed it up. So end story, I'm sure whatever weight you request will be just fine.

If I lead anyone to believe that he changes balance to anything but nuetral to slightly forward balance, I apologize. I've owned ST's from 18.5 oz. to 20.8 oz. and all felt fairly equal. I do not prefer the heavier weight for my game.

I have HAD over 10, from plain janes to the biggest he ever made - the ICCS cue. I currently own the only bumperless Hoppe Sugartree and one in the works...:cool:

hey chris....you have got a really lovely sugartree collection...i like second picture ring work...

and how the hell you can get all of your sugartree ...over 10 collection...Eric states..he is slower than snails...he don't answer my mail for over 2-3 months..i don't know how much time he will need to build my cue, if he accept the order:D...and yet you can received 10 of his work..amazing..

don't tell me ...you are his favourite customer :D
 
Sugartree

You can never go wrong with one of his cues...wait patiently and you will have a cue for a lifetime. There is an infinite number of wood combinations...I would simply say that in a lady like way...it depends what color you like, if you decide you want a light brown colored cue, then there are a variety of woods in that hue...then it depends on what kind of player you are, to the type of wood, hardness, etc...he will work with you on that too.

any wood combo from Eric would play nice. doesn't matter what the weight is, Eric cue is pretty much natural balanced from the weight you requested.

As for what kind of tips plays better, that would be your own preference might have to try serveral before you find your liking.

Specs to consider

Hi Sengkun108,

Below are things I will take into consideration when having a cue commissioned:

Shafts
- Tip: Kamui Black soft
- Tip diameter: 1 shaft 12.75mm, 1 shaft 13mm
- Ferrule material: Titan
Eric uses this material for his shaft - I believe because it is very light weight compared to other ferrule materials, therefore, reduce end mass of the shaft --> low deflection
- Taper: what kind of hit do you want? soft, medium or stiff hit? i will leave it to Eric. His cue known for stiff hit and playability
- Joint ring: Eric micro rings
- Shaft collar: Phenolic or Westinghouse Micarta
- Shaft length: 29” (do you want it to be 30"?)

Butt
- Joint type: wood-to-wood flat face 3/8x10 brass pin
- Joint collar: Phenolic or Westinghouse Micarta thread on
- Joint diameter: 0.842” (Predator)or 0.840"?
- Forearm: Macassar Ebony?
- Points: 8 points. Do you want recut points?
- Veneers: triple veneers
- Wrap: wrapless or with leather wrap (elephan ear or buffalo)?
- Butt sleeve: Brazilian Rosewood?
- Butt length: 29”
- But diameter: Do you want a slim, thinner handle? If yes, bottom butt diameter could be 1.20” for example

Overall cue:

Cue weight: 19 oz (do you want a lighter weight, say 18oz?)

Balance point: 19” (I prefer a cue a bit forward balance)

Cored or uncored? Eric now core all his latest cues as he thinks it is the best way to create cues with desired playability

Custom JPs: Do you want custom joint protectors from Eric?

Do you want a Scallops design cue?

This is just my opinion. Hope it makes sense to you

I would go with ebony. I would core the forearm with purple heart, purple heart handle under wrap/leather, and core the butt with maple.

If you go with ebony, i would require a micarta joint, with ivory on the outside.

4. what weight best of his cue
Little forward balanced 19 oz (the purple heart core will help get the weight forward some also)
Grab a 58" cue, get on table and mark your grip hand location, you want a little forward balance. So you add 2-3" in front of grip hand, that's where you want the cue to balance neutral, so when you hold it 2-3" behind that, you create a little forward balance. The cue falls into your bridge hand,

5. Last, waht kind of tip do you use for your sugartree...(Moori, Kamui or else)
Micarta ferrule, hard tip....i like to hear & feel the hit.


You forgot to ask the most important question of all, shaft wood. I would ask Eric too look hard for select true re-claimed old growth. This should net you a cue with a really nice hard hit, good sound.

Anyone is welcome to have a cue spec'd like this, then come back and tell me how it hits! I know i know, everything hits a ton in AZ land! Try one like this and really learn what a good hitter is!
