Super Billiards Expo thread

In the WPBA events they play music. Any particular song may pump one player up while being annoying to another one.

Each of us needs to find our own zen.

John

They played music in the pro arena this weekend....

Don't be silly. Of course you know why. Is it ok if my teacher sits ring side and tells me which shot to play? Come on, 'why?' LOL

I'm not being silly. Think about it, you pre-record some advice then play while listening to it. What happens to you if a piece of advice that gets played in your ear does not apply (or worse !) to the shot at hand ? Are you going to listen to the advice and miss the shot, or block out the advice which is surely a distraction ? Listening to music, white or pink noise, or other background audio track is something the mind can use while playing pool, a bunch of advice that may or may not apply in any given situation is asking for trouble. I can see if the tape had a single message like 'you can't miss ... you can't miss ...', but 'keep your head down, keep your front leg bent sightly, chalk up, ' etc kind of messages continuously playing into your head while attempting to compete at pool is surely a silly thing to do, a gigantic distraction, IMO. Advice from a coach is a horse of another colour ; it is relevant (hopefully) to the specific situation at that specific time, something that a pre-recorded tape is highly unlikely to provide (unless you make the same mistake over and over and over :) ).

Dave, who has often wondered about the advice Henning gives in The Pro Book where he says make a motivational tape to play in the car on the way to the hall (he doesn't say to listen to it while competing, btw, not that this ommision means he nessessarily agrees with me).

Jam, thanks for the pict. and all your hard work. I didn't get to go but you made me feel like I was. May you be bless in life and pool!!!!! ;)

i understand where you're coming from completely.

as for myself though, eventually i'd like to be good enough that i won't care if the guy had a two way radio with someone giving him advice and a loudspeaker blasting his pre shot routine to him........... :D

VAP

If I may interject, VaPoolPlayer, I'm going to make a point of order here: HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you, Kid! :)

To stay on topic of the thread, only two Philippinos showed up at the SBE this year: "Jalapena" and Santos. Jose Parica, who came in second place last year in the Pro tourney, had to cancel his plans at the last minute. As luck would have it, "Jalapena" and Santos pulled each other for the very first round, with "Jalapena" coming out the winner!

Another bit of SBE smut, during 4:00 p.m match on Friday (I think), Keith was due to meet up with the winner of the Charlie Williams versus Steve Lillis match on the B side. As it turned out, he faced Charlie in a match that seasawed back and forth. At one moment, Keith pulled out ahead 7 to 6, racing to 10. There were 3 balls remaining on the table, and just as he was getting ready to fire at the 7-ball, all the lights went out in the room. The engineering crew flew in there and fixed the problem within seconds, but it was kind of funny seeing the looks on the players' faces when they came back on. :p

I've got a few business cards that I can't for the life of me put a face to.

Hey Kimberly-with-a-T, one of those business cards you cannot put a face to may be mine. I don't remember if I actually gave you one, but I know you wanted to use the restroom and that you were one of those people who refused to pay my $2 restroom toll. Dunno if you remember me. And if you do, I hope I behaved myself. I discovered that they had that rare 160 proof Austrian rum that I have not been able to find anywhere in the US and put a small dent in the bottle (and an ache in my head the next day).

Anyway, it was good to meet you. I thought you were just Tony from Hustlin USA's girl, but now it appears that you are somewhat of a pool vet? Not the dogging-it kind, a veteran, I mean. :D Hope to see you around pool some more.

BTW, Mike Janis, if you are reading this I am trying to get hold of you. Not sure if you got my email from Monday...

And I can still smell it too...WOW!!! You should post more often, IMO.

Yeah, now that I have updated my info and password I have no excuse. But I promise, after today I will only post if I have something noteworthy to say...

Were you at the party on Saturday night?

Yes, you gave me a card and yes I do remember your face, but only because I cheated... I searched your name on the internet & found your pic. :D

I had to email a certain someone else and they reminded me who they were by the conversation we had... I'm still laughing.... And yes, you did behave yourself. There's only one thing I'm trying to remember and I can't.... you probably won't either if you were already hitting the rum .... I don't know what I said, but I remember you saying "I like you already!!". I probably said something that will make my face turn red now that I'm sober.

You'll see me again.... If you think about it, remind me when you guys are in the Hagerstown, MD area... that's just a jaunt down the road.

It was a pleasure meeting you, and yes I'm a pool vet of sorts... been around the game for awhile and have befriended many people in the pool world... I love the game and the people that come along with it. ;)

Not Al's best picture, LOL! He is one of NJ's best kept "secrets" now that Danny Basavich is more of a household name.

Gee, sorry, the rum dimmed any chances of me remembering what you said -- not that it was not important ;) -- but I forgot how strong that stuff is. I totally misjudged it. I do remember that you and Tony were the last people I managed to say something comprehensible to (I think) before disappearing to go find a soft pillow and a bed. I'll wrack my brain to see if I can remember...

I'll remind you about our Hagerstown tourney. Then you'll have no excuse not to show up. Maybe by then I will have remembered what it is that gave me that instant affinity (I mean, besides the Stroh Rum)...

Hagerstown Billiards is a typical old-school room, but we had a great tournament there last year and it should be even better this time around. They have enormous spaces around/between their tables -- a real pleasure to play there. I look forward to seeing you there. Do you play? We have a women's event on the Sunday... you could make it worth the trip.

Nick,

You can get Stroh rum in the States. I've had a bottle in my liquor cabinet for years now. I only bought it because I thought it was really funny that it has "Caution Flammable" on the label.

I haven't owned a cue since '98 but I'm looking to get another one and get back into it. The only problem is I can't find a place that I like to play... there's no "real" pool halls that have big tables here and I despise bar boxes. I want a place where I can rent a table, get a beer, and not have a bunch of kids running around. I've been to one pool room in Hagerstown and the one you mentioned might've been it. I recall them having tons of space between the tables.... Don't forget to let me know and you'll see me there.

YES!!!! I love head games!!! Female.

Okay, now I'm even more perplexed. I counted about 5 women of which Timberly, Sally and Cece (my Planet Pool partner) were the ones I remember talking to for more than just a "Hey, how ya doin'?" Soooo, if you are Sally or Cece, give up the game right now! :D

C'mon, need clues...

Where do you live where they don't have real poolrooms? I guess I have been spoilt around the DC area where there are scores of places to choose from. Besides Salisbury, MD this is the only other place I have lived in the US, and there has always been a decent poolroom around.

Well Nick, I dunno what to tell you. I am not any of those ladies that you mentioned. I talked to you before VF and I talked to you at the expo outside of the party. We didn't talk a whole lot at the party, except about the smell of your drink. Again...WOW! I first met you in VA in Feb.

Aha! Now my memory is starting to come back. I may even remember what I said to Timberly at this rate. If I have all the pieces of the puzzle down correctly, then you must be XXXXXX.... Your secret is out!

Are you coming to our next 8-Ball event? The venue has changed from Rockville to Shirlington in VA.

Yep that's me XXXXXX! LMAO..thanx. Nothing gets by you, lol. I think I gave you too many clues. ;)

EDIT- As for now I am planning on making the 8ball event. Rockville would have been a lot better, IMO. But Shrirlington isn't too far out of the way. I just need to make sure my schedule is clear that Sunday.
