SVB to Kick Off High Run Attempts

I don't have a dog in this fight but many years ago I attended a photography school studying commercial photography. So I know very well about perspective and distortion with lenses.

I went down to my basement and measured the pockets of my GC4. Each corner was 5" at the opening and 4.1/4 at the pocket back. With each of my high end lenses you could tell the opening was wider. Until I used my phone camera from about five inches away. Damn if the back didn't look wider than the front. (mouth, whatever)

Since most photos today are shot with Chinese phones before you jump all over Lou do your own testing. Use your telephone and get low and very close. Use a ruler so you know for sure. You can make your camera lie.

Leave the dislike of personality out of it. Facts before acts.

I get it so post a pic of the measurement at the throat of the pocket and put it to bed!

The photos, which I have had for awhile, show the pocket and caliper measurements for the middle of the pocket and the throat.

But... those photos are not mine and the guy who they belong to has not given me clearance to post them. Basically his position is that regardless of what the photos show our pockets will continue to be nitpicked. And frankly, re-reading the posts here on this subject I can't say I blame him. So no photos. Sorry.

I can't figure out why I read through so much of this thread, but it is kind of fun. I appreciate anything that promotes pool and enjoy watching great players play. I followed the JS high run thread for a while, but finally bailed out...

I don't think there is any chance that new pocket details will be revealed for the JS run. I think it would be interesting, but don't think it can or will happen. I also don't really understand why there was a steady thread of anger before, during, and continuing till today regarding the attempt. He/they decided to try to beat a 5XX run, worked hard at it, and eventually pulled it off. Nicely done.

Now another party - some of which were definitely among those disparaging JS's attempt - are essentially doing the same thing, but with a different format. This is a fun idea that should provide some great viewing, so kudos, but, it seems rather a stretch to pretend is it NOT an attempt to one-up JS. I have no problem with anyone or any group deciding to one-up another. This is pretty common, and I see nothing wrong with it. But pretending that JS's high run isn't the target or reason for this attempt is VERY hard to believe. What JS did was pretty interesting and focused. He/they stated their objecive, then set about trying to accomplish it. As far as I know, nobody had ever really done this - at least not in a planned, organized way before.

I think this new effort sounds like a great idea. Whether the idea is actually to beat JS's run or just to "see what some great modern players can pull off" is not really my concern - I'm in it for the entertainment and love watching straight pool. But I don't think this effort would ever have happened if the JS group had not done their thing first and garnered lots of attention (way too much of it bad in my opinion).

I like Lou, but he sometimes seems to just throw gas on fires that don't really need it. Or maybe let fires grow out of control when he has a perfectly functional fire extinguisher at hand. Regarding the corner pockets, there are only a few possibilities.

1) The pockets are, in fact, normal or near-normal, but the camera angle/lens distortion make the angles "look funny". This is a real possibility - wide angle lenses and close focus do tend to exaggerate the "vanishing point" effect.

2) The pockets are not exactly normal, but aren't way out or intentionally gaffed up. This could be accidental, and might not be that big of a deal - but the camera angle may make it look more severe.

3) The pockets are gaffed up (intentionally or not) and the angles are, in fact, "considerably more "accepting".

I don't think the correct answer can absolutely be discerned from the picture I've seen, but there is a 100% chance that Lou (or whoever) could clear this up easily. Since he has clearly avoided showing any pictures of the table/pocket with multiple measurements (or balls at different depths), it is (in my opinion) somewhat unlikely that the answer is "1". If the answer was "1", I (at least) would have let everyone get reved up, then posted the picture/measurements just for fun (for extra fun do it from the same perspective as the first, but with balls deeper in the pocket). Since no pictures, videos, or measurements have been provided, answers "2" or "3" seem more likely.

Disclaimer for Lou - I know that you understand that posting a picture showing "1" would only satisfy MOST of the detractors/interested parties. I get that. There are others that would still complain - in spite of the evidence - or would just find something else to complain about.

Well, first off, the disparaging of John's run on AZ was primarily conducted by Danny H and an anonymous poster who goes by xradarx, and neither has been participating in the threads about our event, so you are not much better on this subject than many others.

And as I have said ad nauseam, this is not about beating John's run. This is something Bobby has been wanting to do out of his passion and love for the game for over 20 years. If John had never been born Bobby was going to do this.

Lastly -- about your gas throwing comment -- guilty as accused. But who doesn't like a good weenie roast, and weenies are something we have an abundi of here on AZ. So get a stick and make yourself comfortable somewhere around the camp fire.

Has nothing to do with the deliberate action taken in the table you're using to open the throat if the pockets up to make it much easier to pocket balls. One has nothing to do with the other, YOUR table was DELIBERATELY altered from stock, just admit it.

Does this "just admit it" stuff work for you in life?

Do you just go around and demand people "just admit it" when you disagree with what they say? Do you really expect people to "just admit it" when they don't believe what you want them to cop to?

Thank you.

I'm looking at the photos now on my desk top and we are AOK for probably everyone in the world except Glenn. In a past life I shot photos for a newspaper, magazine, and other projects -- had all the lenses and different camera bodies. So I know how deceiving photos can be. Cell phone cameras are the worst.

wow!!!!!!!!!!! lou, you should have made this a dick contest, since you have at least 2 top contenders so far. keep up the good work.

Here’s a GC1....original rubber....I don’t think balls can distort measurements...they’re 2.25 inches

No matter what camera you use to take a picture of the corner pocket, it won't change the fact that the pocket liner is exposed in the throat of the pocket because the pocket throat of the rail no longer extends to the edge of the pocket, because its been cut back. If you take a look at the picture I posted, you'll clearly see the pocket liners are clearly exposed in the throat of the pocket on both sides.

How hard would it be to place 2 balls together side by side in the throat of the pocket then take a picture of that? Again, NO camera or angle in which the picture is taken is going to show the balls don't touch each other because the throat of the pocket is so wide. On a stock pocket the balls won't fit side by side in the throat, they're wider than the throat of the pocket is....but not on this table, the throat is wider than the balls put together!!!

Post on picture of the pocket on YOUR pool table with the balls in the throat, let's see how that looks😅

How about the throat of this pocket, does it appear to be as wide as the mouth of the pocket is? The miter angles in this pocket are 140 degrees, 5 degrees LESS than parallel angles😉

Post a picture of 2 balls together in the throat of the pocket and I won't say another word in this thread, just make sure the balls are as far back in the pocket as they'll go, and side by side!!!
