First of all... wow, fickle crowd jumping off the SVB bandwagon this quickly. If there is a harder sport to repeat as champion, I have never seen it. Not only do you need to catch a gear at the right time in a tourny, but you need a decent draw, and a little bit of luck. Anyone who has been watching Shane of late can see that the skill is still there, and the wins will be piled deeply by the time he leaves this game.
And in my less than expert opinion, I think his all around game is improving. His safety play, and banking seem to be better every time I watch him. You couple that with his shockingly good break, and potting ability... other player cannot help but fear him.
On a side note, doesn't this show how incredible Earl's repeat world 9-ball championship was. And how, even at the top of his game, he never repeated as US Open Champ back to back years. And if my memory serves, I think Varner is the only one to go back-to-back at the US Open. This game is brutal, and I feel lucky to have seen a year like SVB had last year... and look forward to many strong years to come.
