Swanee 2013:: No jump cues?

Just overheard Mark Griffin announce that there are no jump cues allowed in the tournament. What is the real reason for forbidding players from using them? Is it not in the interest of the sport to promote jumping? Does this rule not favor highly the better players, particularly the Filipinos? I am for inclusiveness, not exclusiveness. What do you think?

I'm sure this subject has come up many times, so please don't make rude comments regarding repitition.

There's a few schools of thought here. I've asked the ownesr of the pool halls that forbid it. The responses were damage control.
One believed it damaged the cloth making it not last as long, another was slate damage and another was ball damage. The response I agreed with (as the first 3 didn't make sense) was harm to other patrons. If you can't jump right, you practice if during that practice you shoot the ball of the table, somebody could not see it and trip on it and then there is a lawsuit. As far as tourney not allowing, I'm not sure why.

Some of those reasons, like cloth and slate damage make sense, but that rule would be then set by the hall, not the tournament director. Jump cues are not forbidden at the hall, only in this event.

As for ball damage, makes no sense; balls collide with each other all the time with similar, if not greater, force than a jump causes.

Couldn't tell you the "real" reason but I wouldn't see any reason for the sport to promote jumping. Especially with a specialty cue. The jump shot is just another type of shot just like a three rail kick is a type of shot.

Maybe they want to promote kick shots :)

Promoting jump cues promotes jumping, which is exciting, which in turn attracts spectators. Spectators pay into the sport.

I think the sport has room for both types of competition. I would rather watch a no jump cue competition, but then again my preference is: no jump cues and 2 shot push out.

If you ever saw Earl jump with his shooting cue in the days before jump cues you would realize what a true professional is. Jump all you want but use your regular cue. JMO

Earl is a monster, and can probably jump with a fishing pole. We are not all Earl.

Jumping allowed but with Shooting Cue

They are just saying not "shorties" or as Earl named it "The Cheating Stick" They are allowed to jump but with their shooting cue but not with the Break Cue. The recent Derby City Classic basically had the same rule. There was some miss-communication about use of the break cue or changing shafts for jumping but the intent at DCC was no special cue to jump only your shooting cue.

The no jump cues rule is showing up at tournaments more and more frequently, and to me it seems pretty inconsequential. IMO the best players are going to have the best chance to win regardless of this rule. I just find it somewhat annoying that all of these special little rules vary from tournament to tournament.

Congratulations to Mark Griffin! We've been playing with the same rule in the Joss Northeast 9 Ball Tour for years. Hope this inspires other TD / Promoters to follow suit! JMO. Worst that can happen is a resurgence in three cushion billiards. How can that be bad?

No one said a resurgence in 3-c was bad.

Can someone please tell me one instance where jumping damaged the slate!!! That's insane... I would bet you couldn't drop a ball off the to of a 2 story building and have it damage slate!

kick

just think if Efren would have had a jump cue we would have missed those magical shots. all the phillipinos kick like magicians .I really hate when a player borrows a jump cue in a tourn.Golf has rules that have lasted forever. Some things just should stay the same . Texas express, alternate break, and sandbagging handicaps,. S WHATS NEXT BALL IN HAND EVERY SHOT.

If things stayed the same only rich people would play, and we would have to play it on the ground.

Ha

Not many rich in the places i grew up. The industry dictated the jumpcue rules to sell a product . When guys started jumping with just their shafts wala a rule jumped up no jumping with shafts. Jumping is for lesser players your right it favors people who learn to play learn why those diamonds are thereand reward them for position play and hard work .Poor guys cant afford a bag fuull of clubs i mean cues.

Yet Earl will play with something like an 80" cue at times. That's ok, but let someone whip out a 30" cue and oh boy, watch out......

I think having a break cue makes the break easier and thus shouldn't be allowed.........

I think having a longer cue takes away from learning how to use a bridge and shouldn't be allowed.......

I think low deflection shafts keep people from learning how to use deflection and shouldn't be allowed.....

See where I'm going with this? Jump cues are no different than any other piece of equipment most players feel are standard.

I think they should ban jump cues in all tournaments. Everyone should have to learn how to kick.

A lot of times, even with a jump cue and the jump being easier to hit the object ball, a kick is the better shot. I've had my jump cue out before, been down on the shot, then put it away and opted for a kick.

I think it adds playability to the game and learning when to jump and when to kick is just as important as anything.
