Swanson Tourney

I was there yesterday. I'm not sure what the brackets look like now but I can tell you who I saw playing. First, there was a field of 164 which included many amatures (like myself), and lots of (A) players and pros. I saw, Kim Davenport, Ernesto D., Max E., Amar Kang, Tony Chohan, Billy Palmer, Cole Dickson, Morro, Mellisa Herndon, Angel Paglia, Santos S., Oscar D, Fach G, Damien A, Danny Petralba, Gerardo Jamito, Jimmy Mendoza, Mike Massey, Paul Potier, George Michaels, Jonny Kang, Cory Harper, and many others.

I won my first match and then lost the next two matches so I'm out but I had a great time and saw some good matches like Billy Palmer beat Kim Davenport hill hill and Angel Paglia beat Cole Dickson. I think the tables on the main floor caught some players by surprise, because of the pocket size (4 inches), but overall the tables looked and played awsome. I will return today and see how the tournament ends, I'll keep you posted. Peace.

When I left today, amar was going to play santos and tony chohan was going to play victor ignacio on the winner side. Dont know much about the loser side.

I could be wrong but I believe that Amar and Chohan were going to play for the hot seat when I left. Santos was playing Victor, and Ernesto Was playing Danny Patrabla (Probably spelled wrong)

That was the final 6. Max had just lost to Danny, and potier Lost to ernesto for the 7th & 8th spot

Results:

1. Amar Kang
2. Tony Chohan
3. Ernesto Dominguez
4. Santos Sambajon
5/6: Victor Castro & Danny Petralba
7/8: Max Eberle & ???

Notes:

- The finals (race to 13) went by fast. Chohan and Kang both play fast and I'm sure between the two of them they had a saver.
- The Ernesto / Santos Semi-finals was great. There was never more than a 2-game lead, and Esnesto made a surprise combo on the 9 to get on the hill. I kid you not, everyone around me at once said, "whoa!" when Ernesto pulled off the combo. Completely unexpected. Next game he ran to a tied up 8/9 and played a safe, hooking Santos to the 9. Santos fouls, Ernesto has the easy 8 & 9 to win. Better luck next time, Santos.
- Max played like ass against Petralba on the B side. At least 3 times he hooked himself mid-runout. He should have beat Petralba at least 7-3, but ended up losing by that same margin. A shame.
- Chohan smoked Ernesto to get to the finals. He was breaking big and running out from everywhere.

Not entirely dissatisfied.

I'm not entirely dissatisfied with the way I played. I got a bye in the first round and in the second I pulled Phil Farretti. He played really good; however, I was able to play my game for the most part and pulled it out 8-5.

My second draw was Santos Sambajon and I'm not so proud of my showing with him. He played really good, but he made a couple of key mistakes that should have cinched it for me. I broke and made nada, he ran out and then broke and ran out. He broke and let the cueball fly off the table. I took BIH and ran out. I broke and had a good runout, but somehow managed to bobble the four in the pocket, it took me by surprise. But I kept my head. He ran out, then got a nothing on the break. I ran to the three and hit a safety a little too hard. In my defense, the cueball was a different weight than the one I started with but that shouldn't be an excuse. after that messed up safety I let Santos into my head and couldn't pull it together again.

Oh well, by the time my loser's side match came up, it went from a supposed 45 minute wait to a three hour wait, I was so dead tired my stomach hurt. I just gave up after some stupid play. I couldn't think at all. Oh well. There's always Reno...... :)

Paul Potier finished the same as Max I believe. Jimmy Mendoza had a good showing and finsished right behind Paul. The match between Paul and Jimmy was a little tough for Jimmy to take, I think. A couple rolls for Paul.

Ah that's right. With such a mouth, I'm amazed I forgot about Potier!

Hey steve

Hey Steve, remember the guy you played in the first round Chris Rose? He ended up in 25th. He beat out Brian Parks in the loser's and then lost to Max Eberle.

Didnt Brian get beat by Ernesto in the losers side? I may be remembering wrong.
Any idea who the Arlo guy was? I have never seen him before.

Don't know.

I don't know Arlo? I'd have to see him though, because I'm horrible with names. For instance, I knew that Amar Kang played real well from somewhere, but I didn't know his name. I had also heard of him but didn't know that it was the same person.

As far as wether Ernesto put out Brian, I don't know for sure I wasn't there, but Chris Rose is a guy that I taught and he told me that that's what happened. I just got off the phone with him like two minutes ago. I didn't go back down the second day because I was just too tired.

I wore myself out playing Phil and Santos with the long delays of being in the winners and the extreme nervousness I had. I feel better about it now. This was the first big tourney I've played in in a long time so I was really nervous and I just completely wore myself out.

Of course I remember Chris.

Good to hear he did alright. He and I both played like ass in the first match, but I guess that's what we get for not warming up for our first match of the day (both got byes). Glad to hear he got his act together after me. Beating Brian Parks is pretty strong.

Did you end up doing any better than Chris (whose AZB name I still forget despite asking him twice!)?

Congratulations on at least stepping up and playing Jaden! I don't think I'd be able to even hold my cue straight against a player like Mr. Sambajon, let alone run a rack.

Actually I did Worse, but that's alright. I would've minded if I could see straight during my last match. I should've taken a nap on one of those couches, but they kept telling me and chris that our matches were coming up and then we ended up having to wait multiple hours to play. After I lost to Santos, the toll of my adrenaline worked it's way in and then after I was up in my first loser's bracket match 4-2 I couldn't run more than four balls even on those huge pockets upstairs, it would've been pathetic had I not been so freaking tired, chris was watching me telling me all the stuf I'm usually telling him... I.E. you're pulling up on all of your shots etc etc....

And all I could say is that I was an old man compared to him and couldn't pull out those fifteen hour stretches any more. In truth I probably could've if I hadn't had to play the tough players I had to in my first couple of matches and didn't have my adrenaline levels through the roof.

I'll say one thing though. That first match was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. Playing againsst someone who had people show up just to wach him, and then to play your game and put him out, to look up and have all of those people looking down watching you play. It was awesome, a great feeling, just really tiring.

I guess that Chris and Brian went hill hill, and chris ended up running the last rack after an early safety with a really good breakout. There was a little conrtoversy though because his five ball was sitting right in the side pocket and it fell in without anyone or anything touching it. They had the TD spot it and he managed to run it out to win.

His match with Max I guess Max only gave him one real shot the whole time and he ran out. But that was his only game unfortunately.

A friend of mine actually ended up napping on one of the upstairs couch after his 4th match, figuring that not only was he tired but that he'd also have at least a couple hours wait until his next match. Good thing to remember in the future.

Well at least Chris beat Brian. Had he beaten Max that'd have been a big upset. Max only lost 6 games the entire first day of competition.

If you're much of a one-pocket fan, starting this summer Jeff (Hollywood Billiards owner) is going to start having an annual memorial tournament for Hollywood Jack (who recently passed) with $1,000 added. Maybe I'll see you around then.

Yeah Ernesto was playing next to us and was eyeing me after I ran that rack, but unfortunately it was the only one..... LOL

I sent these results to Mike earlier today. He must not have had a chance to post them. The above info is correct and Paul Potier did finish tied for 7-8.
Prize money was 1. 2,500. 2. 1,500 (Amar and Tony saved 300) 3. 1,000
4. 700 5-6. 500 7-8. 350 48 places paid in total.

Hey Jay, I just wanted to tell you that you ran an awsome tournament, I had a great time and saw enough great pool to inspire me to practice hard for a long time to come. I spoke with you a little during the tournament, my name is Jeff J (black guy with braids) I told you I had a DVD with you hosting a one pocket match (20k) between Ronnie Allen and Danny DilBierto (sp). Anyway I was impressed by the Northern Cali crew of Amar K., Tony C., and Billy Palmer and their syle of play... Wow do I have a lot to learn. I wish parts of this tournament could have been recorded on tape or at least given press acknowledgement on the opening page of AZ Billiards... Oh well maybe next year. Peace.
