Sylver how good is this guy!

I thought Keith was going to rip this guy apart. He must play great or was it just the tourney format?
To be honest, I wasn't too impressed with his game. I don't think Keith's head was in that match; he would have won easily if it were. I think it was a case of relaxing against a weaker opponent.

I had heard about Ochoa doing well in Texas and expected him to be impressive. But he missed lots of long shots against Keith (several badly) and stood over the ball for a LONG time which to me said he lacked confidence. I could have caught him on a bad night but I was very surprised he beat Souquet too.

I have to agree, I was really suprised he beat Keith and totally shocked he beat souquet! I saw bits of his game against keith and he didn't look very confident. I was also a little shocked when I saw him warming up for his match against Earl, he was missing everything by a long while just in the warm up by himself and it went down hill from there. He may just have been nervous and I don't blame him, I played terrible too. But to me it looked like he had a very good kicking and banks game but his potting particulary looked to be his weak point. If he improved that Im sure he would be a better player. Did he play well against Souquet anyone, I didnt see this match?

I could accept your rationale if Sylver and Keith had never played before, but I think they matched up in Louisville last year with the kid winning.

The kid plays great! At 20, he's beating world champs. Not only that, I was sitting next to him at the pool room when he was playing Ronnie Wiseman even one pocket. That's too strong.

I think Sylver Ochoa is in his early twenties, maybe 23 if memory serves me right. He's a great player. At the risk of not insulting the younger members on the forum, he's a good player for a young pup [inside AzB joke]. :D ;)

The match between him and Keith was a battle of safety after safety after safety. I have NEVER seen Keith utilize the jump cue as much as he did during this round at the Open. Sylver is proficient in one-pocket, and therefore, he is able to capitalize on playing an opponent safe when in doubt. Until the score was 8 Keith and 6 Sylver, the Earthquake managed to hold a 2-game lead, but when he scratched on a 5-ball in the side pocket, Sylver surged forward, making the score 8 to 7. He then went on to pocket a 9-ball on the break, and then he proceeded to snatch the almighty win, allowing him to remain on the winners' side to face U.S. Open Champion Ralf Souquet.

Two completely different styles of play, Sylver is a slower player and studies the table thoroughly before he fires the trigger on the majority of his shots. Keith, on the other hand, is a rhythm shooter, playing fast and loose.

When Sylver faced Earl Strickland later on in the tournament, the Pearl was on a roll and was taking no prisoners. When the score reached Earl 10 (on the hill) and Sylver 2, Sylver politely unscrewed his stick and conceded. Earl really played well that match and didn't give Sylver many opportunities at the table.

I think Sylver had a fantastic U.S. Open performance, beating many great players, and he's most definitely one to watch on the horizon. I fondly call him the "Texas Sylver Bullet" who shot down my horse at the Open! :
