While doing the exhibitions when the chance comes around we look for younger pool players to take part. We do this for 2 reasons, 1) We just like to make kids smile, 2) we need to give the younger pool players something to remember and keep them interested in the sport.
So while in Detroit Johnny says to me "Hey you see that little kid there? I wanna give him a chance to play". He was sat in the front row with his little cue all excited. So I went over to his dad and asked would it be ok? His Dad was obviously excited about the idea and asked his son. His son says cooley and confidently yes.
So, I give JA the nod as he was stood waiting for Earl to finish his trick shots and stoke shots. Ja comes over to chat with the little fella and their conversation goes like this.
JA: Hey man, how old are you?
Kid: 7
Kids dad: You are 5.
Kid: NO I"M 7
JA: Ok, you look 7 I believe that.
JA: So how long you been playing professional?
Kid: about 3 years
JA: Wow, so you must be a good player then.
Kid: Yep.
JA: So you been on ESPN?
Kid: Yep, a few times:
Kid: I won alot of tournaments.
JA: Well I play ok but sounds like you got me licked already, but do you want to play a rack against me?
Kid: Sure.
So at this point I get up and tell Johnny, " I want you to find the one guy in the room who you think is the biggest challenge to you tonight"
Johnny looks around the room and finally point at the 5yr old ...oopps I mean 7 year old. This kids cue was taller than him and made a couple of good shots. Johnny Archer #1 ranked player in the USA must have felt the pressure from this kid and ran out to the 9ball. Archer dogged the 9 as a result of the constant pressure he had been under from the young pro and left the 9 hanging.
Our young pro made the 9 and got appause from everyone. I could be wrong on this but I am pretty sure the kid shook hands with Johnny and and calmly walked away like he just beat his sister and said "Rack em". Johnny had to explain that it was only one game and that he had to play some other people (who all lost by the way). Johnny and I watched this kid a couple of times during the rest of the night and you could not get the grin off his face.
So there you go, just something I thought I would throw out there as I thought it was too cute. I have a son myself and I could see the same thing happening with him when he was that age.
Thank you all for your support of the Legends and Champions Tour in the Mid West. We will be in Des Moines tomorrow night at Big Dogs Billiards for an exhibition at 8pm and a pool school between 11.00 andf 3.00 the next day. The School is full for that one.
The we will be in Omaha, Nebraska at Strokers for an exhibition and a pool school the next dat then to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at Jamaica Joe's For an exhibition and pool school.
