TABLE ? Aside from Slate will MDF work ?

Cheaper tables use MDF instead of slate all the time. They tend to warp rather quickly though. The formica might help a little and if you replace the MDF as often as your felt you might be alright, but I wouldn't suggest it. If you're gonna build a table, just buy the slate. You can get 4.5 x 9 foot 3 piece for about 600.
They other issue is the weight comparison. MDF tables won't stay level because when u lean on it for a shot, the whole table moves. You should just do slate.
What about slat-tron i heard its better than mdf but not quite as good as slate, but not to expensive
No offense, but anything but Slate is a very poor investment, IMO. Most "tables" of this quality will last only but a couple of years, if that. It also makes for a very poor practice table as well.
Why not go for one of the import Chinese "Imperial" brand tables with 1 inch think slate? They can be had for about $1,500 new, and will last a long time, and some play pretty well. It's no Gold Crown III or anything, but certainly quite acceptable.
Also consider a fire sale on a used table. If it's properly moved and installed, it can be a great investment as well.
If your like me, and like a good value for your money, and it sounds like you do, since you are asking, the best price is not always the best value. The worst part is that you sometimes never learn what quality is until it's too late. For even a casual player, say three or four hours a week, a Slatron table will not get the job done.
