Nothing, which is why slate is still being used today by table manufactures. If there WAS something else to use besides real slate...it would be in use today;)
 
Table beds.

I have seen tables in Europe and Asia use Marble in place of slate

If you have ever seen the Z table or L shaped table made by a cabinet maker in Wisconsin, used 1/4 plexiglass glued to MDF.
