i brush from the head to the foot of the table
i read you can and should? vaccuum the table
if thats so how often and do you have a specific brand you find works well and wont hurt the felt??
thanks in advance for any suggestions

You can use a home type vacuum with the brush or wide attachment (no beater bar attachments) or a dustbuster once a week or more if you play a lot. Either will pull lint, hairs and chalk dust from the cloth with the latter being more important. Just be careful that whatever you use is smooth and won't snag the cloth. Follow that with a wipedown using a damp (meaning really wrung out) microfiber cloth to remove chalk marks.

Using a regular brush doesn't remove chalk dust.

I bought an 11" horse hair vacuum attachment from a vacuum store and use it on my shop vac. It really keeps the cloth clean and chalk dust to a minimum.

save your money

No need to spend your money. It's fine to use a regular house vacuum. Just use the bare floor or drapery attachment.... no beater. Make sure there isn't too much suction that it grabs the cloth. I have a dedicated head for my table, so I don't have to worry about any dirt from the floor. You may want to search the forums here, this has been addressed several times.

I like the simonis x-1. Vacuums seem to pull up some of the threads and create nap.

5 years and no problems

I've used a vacuum for at least 5 years and the cloth [860] has not suffered, in my opinion. When I changed the cloth six months ago, the slate was quite clean too... no build up of chalk. It seems to strike a pretty good balance, as far as I'm concerned: does the job, does no harm, not very time consuming and with a tool on hand. I'd say, if you're not overly aggressive, it's a good approach. I pull [not push] the head across the cloth with light / moderate suction and, like a brush, only work in one direction. My experience is limited to the 860 on my table. Maybe someone with a pool room can chime in.

Dartman knows how to clean a table.

The other day with time to kill I vacuumed real well then used an X-1 then the "really rung out" microfiber cloth.

Guess what? The cloth still picked up chalk.

IMO X1 doesn't do that well. It does something but not what you'd think for the $$$

Avoid the Black and Decker you linked to. The vacuum opening is only about an inch wide in the center of the mouth. The center pulls out to get under the rails but that is all it is good for.

I could not find the one available at Lowes online but here is the Shop Vac equivalent:
http://www.shopvac.com/shopvac-accessories/Products/Dual-Surface-Selector-Nozzle__906-12-00.aspx The one at Lowes is about $13.00. I vacuum my table with this attachment on a small 3 gal. shop vac from Home Depot. Works great. It has an adjustment to raise / lower the brush I put a quarter and two nickles under one of the adjustmet levers and get just the right brush height. My 2 cents. (I guess that might be my 35 cents)
